PC won't POST, boot, nada....

I've just bought:

i7 930
DFI DK X58 T3eH6
6gb 1600 corsair memory
Power color 5870


I needed to put the graphics card into the lowest PCI-E 16 slot and wanted to test the system before assembling the case.

When I power on the system draws power for half a second and stops, then will not draw power until i restart the mains.

It does not post, beep, or give me an error code.

I've moved the gpu into the top slot, moved the ram, used 2 sticks rather than 3... tried a fair few simple things... but nada

What could this be? Please help

Let's try again, less subtly. What's the PSU? You don't list it.

My first suspect is the case power switch, you can short the PSU connector to turn it on manually.

Second suspect is a short. Check motherboard standoffs and the IO shield.

Power switch is on the mainboard and I've tried the case one - neither work

how do you mean check the standoffs and mainboard? for what?

To make sure the board isn't being short circuited. Sometimes extra unused motherboard stand offs on the case will come into contact with pins from the motherboard, causing a short circuit and preventing the motherboard from turning on properly.

It is weird that you're not even getting an error code though, that means your board isn't even managing to start booting.

Perhaps you could check all the connections too? 24pin motherboard, 4/8pin 12V, PCI-E?

Ah yeah you could also just try to boot it outside of the case altogether and see how it goes too.

it is - has been since start - just on tray on desk with psu connected

Memory in a core i7 based computer must be populated in the right sockets, if its done wrong the computer will not post. Remove all the memory, check the manual and put in one dimm in the correct slot, which I believe should be the one nearest the CPU. I cannot download the manual to check, but this was the case with the previous version of the board.

If it was a GPU problem you would get beeps from the board.

thanks for all the replies so far but still no joy:

It's out of the tray, so nothing to short it, just using one stick of ram in dimm#2 (checked to make sure that's correct) and nothing else.

It powers up for about 2 seconds now (without the GPU in) or 1 second as before (with the GPU in).

now codes, beeps or POST is displayed before it powers down.

Does anyone have any other ideas? Might it be the CPU at fault?

Is the cooler properly fitted and down flat on the chip? I would consider removing the cooler, and chip for damage on the chip bottom or motherboard pins. Take a picture of them (real close up), that way if your unsure in the future you don't gave to do it again.

It sounds more like the board to me than the CPU to me, I feel quite pleased I got scan to flash my bios, that way I know the board must have been working. (I also got scan sure just in case). Can you borrow any components, test things like the graphics card or the monitor in another computer to try to eliminate bits that work.

Duh! I know what it could be. The i930 is a new chip isn't it. The board might not support it yet! I had that problem with the w3550, got scan to flash the bios for me with one I knew supported the chip.(The chip being unsupported until a just released bios, I didn't have a non booting system).
