Windows 7 see's 6Gb RAM, 4 usable

Hey all,

So got the system working (lets not go into that)

However, noticed today that windwos only see's 4Gb RAM usable.

I DEFINITELY have Windows 64 Bit install yet only 4Gb RAM is usable, I have checked all the settings from within advanced options, under boot in MSCONFIG to downloading and checking with CPU Z.

Reading various forums suggest a number of things, one being reseating the RAM which I will do tonight, the other being bent pins in the mobo socket. How likely is the latter in causing the sytem to see less RAM?

Is memory remap enabled in the BIOS?

I will have a look tonight, havent really messed with the BIOS before so will have to see if I can find it.

Tbh im a bit concerned that it may be a damage Mobo socket, which would mean being without my PC for atleast a week while SCAN decide whether to just straight swap or charge me etc.

Is this a new build? 3 x 2GB?

I had one RAM socket not working because one CPU pin on the motherboard was bent. Carefully bending it back fixed the problem.

One way to check if its the motherboard RAM socket is to test with each RAM module at a time in each socket.

Windows and CPU Z say that 6Gb RAM is installed, but only 4Gb is usable.

I really don't want to be messing with the CPU socket if that is the issue, would rather send it back to SCAN for replacement/ refund.

I havent checked the BIOS because I only noticed when I remoted onto the PC from work today. I will check tonight and test some things I have had suggested then report back.

If Windows/CPUz sees 6gb then you don't have a bent pin problem. This sounds like software to me. Does the windows memory checker come up with any errors?

Haven't tried it or ever used it before.

I will try the BIOS stuff first and if that doesnt work then I will check the windows memory checker ma bob

Couldn't find the memory remap in the BIOS options, booted into windwos and its showing as having 6Gb installed, but no 2 usable.

Memory test reported now errors.
Windows still see's 6Gb installed with 2Gb usable.


Not really sure what to try other than re-seating.

What motherboard are we talking of? I'm still sold on it being a memory remap issue (and it's likely there by another name) - once I know the motherboard I'll see if I can find you the bit you need.

Hey mate,

the mobo is Gigabyte X58A-UD3R (Think its Rev 2)

After reading various threads, some state it could be the CPU..how possible is this?

Having a snoop around it looks as if it could be a RAM compatibility issue..damn it!

Is the RAM you have on the QVL? if not it doesn't necessarily mean that it won't work, but...

Also what BIOS revision are you running? Just going to take a peek in the manual now. Latest BIOS is FE, while FB reported to improve RAM compatibility.
