    alternative router firmware

On various forums I keep seeing mentions of DGT firmware (or is it DRT?) but can't find much info about what it actually is, what it is supposed to do for your router or where you get it. Can anybody fill me in on the basics? My router is a Netgear DG834GT.

    Cheers,
    Dave

That would be DD-WRT, and unfortunately your router isn't listed as supported.

    Re: alternative router firmware

However - to answer the question... many of these routers run a version of Linux to run the routing software, although normally it is a closed system. However by flashing the router with new software, again Linux based, but with user/application access, additional functionality can be provided - usually (otherwise there would be no point in doing it) surpassing the capabilities of the original device.

Linksys devices are probably the best known for this. One device (not a router) the Linksys NSLU2 NAS device, can be reflashed to turn it into a miniature low powered server, capable of running a variety of applications, including Apache, MySql, PHP etc etc (although the processor struggles to run MySQL with any pretensions to performance.)

    Re: alternative router firmware

How ironic I was reading up on alternative firmware for the dg834gt yesterday
The only one I found was UberGT which seems popular.

UberGT alternative firmware for the Netgear DG834GT

I havent tried it yet though I am hoping it will speed up the ADSL speed probs I
have with the one i got.

My friend is on tiscali and hits 4.5-6 Mbps with his free usb modem, with the gt though
it only gets to 3.7 Mbps crappy thing.

Any chance you could post back with your findings?
