Vista and Command & Conquer Generals: Zero Hour

Edit: the solution is to create an options.ini, find instructions here: http://forums.hexus.net/1039984-post34.html

Ok, I've tried the different compatibility modes for this, but none of them work. I've downloaded the d3xd9.dll (I needed it for flatout 2...) but what happens is it loads the small splash screen that says generals, does that for about a minute, then it goes away, but it never launches into the actual application.

I've looked on several websites and other people have the same issue, but I haven't found a fix that works yet. But someone said he did manage to get it to work. Any suggestions?

I highly doubt you will get it running on your own. I know that EA stopped supporting the game a while back (PurePwnage)
So there is very low/no possibility that EA will produce a patch.

Your best bet is to wait for someone to release a fix, or just keep fidling/googling around.

Maybe you can get something like VMWare and run it in a virtual Windows XP Enviroment? Not sure if that would work?

Is it set to run like Windows XP (Not sure how you do this in Vista, but i know it can be done)

Might be the copy protection if its not getting past the splash screen, as this is where the checks happen. Yay for DRM.

Could try a no CD patch to see if it fixes it

I don't have a fix but it works fine here on x64 Vista with no compatability modes. I'm running the 100.64 nvidia drivers. This is the version that was in the First Decade pack but as far as I know theres no differences between this and the orignal versions.

Same as Andshrew, I got it working fine on Vista x64 but with the latest ATi drivers. Just make sure you apply all the latest game patches before you run it and you should be fine without any compatibility stuff

I turned fw off, I plugged my modem straight into computer. Neither of those worked, are you getting the same problem as me?

At the loading screen of the match, My bar is the only one that goes up and I can't connect to anybody...

Arrow Same problem (Game does not start)

I installed the game successfully (at least thats what it looked like)

When I press PLAY it hangs on the start screen.

This also happens with GENERALS as well as ZERO HOUR

    I am running VISTA Premium

    System Specs are:
    CPU: INTEL CORE2 QUAD Extreme
    Mobo: ASUS Striker Extreme
    Mem: 4GB (1GB x4)
    GPU: ASUS NVIDIA EN8800GTX/HTDP/768M
    HD: 4 x 120GB SATA drives in Raid 0+1

It worked fine under XP for the same system.

    Any ideas?

I think you're gonna need an upgrade to get it running!

It hangs? What do you mean? Mine shows the splash screen, then it disappears, and CPU usage stops. So it just kills the program really and back to the desktop like nothing happened. Some people are lucky, some aren't. Glad I've kept XP just in case though

I'm experiencing the same issue with Generals, Generals Zero Hour, all of the other C&Cs work flawlessly. C&C Generals's splash screen shows up, it does some loading then it just up and disappears and nothing else happens. The process just ends with no errors or anything.

I had this problem on Windows XP Professional x64 AND Windows Vista x32 Ultimate.

    Patch error.

I get the splash Screen as I insert the disk after the installation is done.

I click on "Check for Updates"

it comes up with "Patches Available. Download?"

    I select (Yes)

It goes looking and downloads all (progress bar completes)

Now I press Play and it starts installing.............

on the 10th file it gives an error message

"Patch error. Existing game files may have been modified. you should reinstall t...."

unable to read the wholw mwssage as it is displayed in the title bar of the dialogue box.

Unhappy Answer is C&C Tiberium Wars

Ok so the patch issu is resolved. I manually applied the patch (Generals-108-english.exe).

But now when I press play it brings up splash screen for a little while and then thats it. no process running no game.

    I guess I won't get it working.

So I have now decided to wait for C&C3 Tiberium Wars that is compatible with Vista-32bit.
