Let see how various CPUs do at HandBrake video encoding!

HandBrake 0.9.5 needs to be used:

Conditions: Regular preset(Normal)

Output file type: MKV

You will find average FPS during the encode in the encode log(activity windows). The total time for the encode can also be worked out too.

Also state what system specifications you are using and how many CPU threads are being used.

Make sure you set HandBreak priority to high in the Tools menu and shut down programmes like Steam,Word and Firefox.

There seems to be a utility to close down any unnecessary processes!!

You could use Smart Close to get a small fps increase , it ends all non critical processes and services automatically, of course you can add exceptions

These are the following results as of post 326.

My results so far:
1.)Tron:Legacy MOV to MKV.85MB file. Average fps=16.013634 fps and total time taken is 3 minutes and 46 seconds.

2.)Splice WMV to MKV.157MB file. Average fps=10.516399 fps and total time taken is 5 minutes and 16 seconds.

System

Core i3 2100. All 4 threads used
4GB 1600MHZ DDR3 RAM
H67 chipset
HD5670
60GB OCZ Vertex SSD(input files on SSD)
250GB Spinpoint P(output files on hard drive)
Windows 7

OK, FYI it's probably a good idea to close programs like Firefox before benchmarking for more accurate results. I gained a small improvement having done this. Results as follows (video, fps, approx size). It's probably best to not bother with MD5 as it seems to vary, maybe there are some timestamps stored in the encoded file.

BBB 31.95fps 133MB
Splice 20.16fps 157MB
Tron 29.64fps 85.6MB

Edit: So far, our results look in line with the benchmarks except for BitTech. Also bear in mind that I'm using a 1055T, not the faster versions used in those benchmarks. Hmm...

Yeah, I didn't really pay it any attention originally but it does eat a few CPU cycles. Or maybe that's just because I have a fair few tabs open...
Either way I don't think the differences make any difference in the grand scheme of things, about 0.3fps in my case. But it's nice to be as accurate as possible.

As mentioned the process priority could really do with setting to high in the handbrake system options, then things like running programs etc won't make much of a difference.

Problem is real time takes over all processes even vital windows ones, not a good idea really from memory lol.

I ran the priority on high for the Splice trailer encode and I got 12.734809 fps. Realtime made no difference. Steam and the web browser were shut down. The Tron:Legacy trailer was encoded at average encoding speed for job is 18.689077 fps.

I think we should run the encodes on a high prority.

Yeah high priority and not using the system is probably the best thing to do. Realtime can cause instability and may be a bit frightening to some users as even the cursor may lock up until the encode has completed.
