Viiv's instant off is actually on

Nobody is saying that Viiv is confusing and turning into a bit of a joke, but there's some confusion over Viiv's instant off feature which has turned it into a complete joke. It turns out Intel are making fools of us all. In instant off mode the computer isn't off at all.
What you have is Intel claiming that it shuts down the computer, but it does not, will not, and was never planned to. If you hit that instant off feature, the machine sits there spinning away at full tilt, or nearly so, sucking down electricity 24 hours by seven. It should be ashamed of itself, needlessly wasting resources and covering it up.

I've already had a laugh at this fact in the ViiV is bull thread

Yeah I can also do what viiv does manually... my monitor has an off switch

Talk about trying to confuse the masses with "technobabble". Intel should be ashamed.

In other news, the Intel PR department are stopping these stories from appearing in the news by closing their eyes, putting their hands over their ears and going "NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA!!"

Intel are getting desperate. Firstly they release benchmarks of a future chip (unheard of by them). Secondly, 'instant off' is purely for show. And as for intel core duo adverts in the UK, yeah im sure the fact that most business laptop use integrated graphics will let you race in 'monaco'.

What? Intel don't have any real competition. AMD can't compete because they can't produce at the volumes needed to become a major player.

Except that given their fabrication deal w/Chartered Semi, they're looking to ramp up production rather a lot.

Personally I use ACPI S3 standby on my machine - it's comparatively instant-off/instant-on (about 3 seconds to turn off or turn on), uses very little power (only the RAM is maintained) and actually gives the impression the machine's off (fans all spin down, hard drive spins down, no power LED). Much more sensible IMHO!

Same....works for me...and impresses the hell out of friends who think that's the amount of time it takes for your PC to cold boot
