The strangest little things interest me...

I was sat at my desk the other day, staring at the system on it. I looked at the RAM and saw that the DIMMs were single-sided, but were tracked out to support chips on both sides.

Then I thought to myself "when making a double-sided DIMM, how do they reflow the solder on both sides of the board without anything falling off?"

    How? HOW I asks ya!

Does it not get dipped and then the parts get stamped on?

That's not a technique I'm familiar with. It usually involves sitting components on a paste that's then baked or heated in some way to 'reflow' it, then when it cools the components are properly soldered in place.

I guess the solder paste could be sticky enough, or a track could hold the components in place.

The main point to my post though... is that I muse over the strangest things.
