    jm micron controller - ip35pro

where are the sata ports for this controller?
    Are they not seperate?
Do you just switch between using intel and jm micron?
On my old m/b there were two storage controllers, but they had different ports and were in different locations on the MB.
On the 35pro, there are just 6 ports aren't there??

not sure but looks like the mobo has two esata ports, I assume thats where they went. I believe the JMicron has one PATA and two SATA connections, or in this case eSATA

The JMicron chip provides support for IDE and the ESATA port, personally I'd disable it and buy yourself a SATA DVD drive to use the ICH9R SATA ports.

Intel don't support IDE any more on their chipsets, which is why board vendors look to other chip vendors to provide an IC to IDE. Sadly most use JMicron, which is buggy and badly supported.

What are you trying to achieve by using the JMicron ports btw?

    cheers dude.
    I have a sata DVD.
I can't enable AHCI though, any thoughts on a clean install to get AHCI to work?

AHCI works by default on Vista and is needed by OSx86 to install, so I'm guessing you're using XP?

There are tutorials out there about switching the AHCI on XP post install, but in all honesty it doesn't yield any performance benefits because of the way the disk I/O works in XP.

    Hope that helps.

Re: jm micron controller - ip35pro

    It does fella, thanks.

I got it working by installing using raid, which enables AHCI apparently!
Anywho, looking at the storage manager software NCQ is supported.
    I got a 2MB/s transfer rate increase.
I guess ncq is on by default, who knows!
Yes this is an xp rig, and to be honest the whole install feels slower! (the raid with non raid! partition)

There's lots of conflicting information out there, and even the intel stuff is confusing as the drivers are for ICH7/8 (R), but it works on the ICH9 (R) as well.

For example, you say intel don't support IDE on their chipsets, but this is from the readme (chipset driver)

The Intel(R) Chipset Device Software installs Windows*
INF files to the target system. These files outline to
the operating system how to configure the Intel(R) chipset
components in order to ensure that the following features
    function properly:

    - Core PCI and ISAPNP Services
    - PCIe Support
    - IDE/ATA33/ATA66/ATA100 Storage Support
    - SATA Storage Support
    - USB Support
    - Identification of Intel(R) Chipset Components in
    the Device Manager

I guess Vista will have it sussed.

    Cheers all,

depending upon drive & usage pattern NCQ can also decrease transfer rates.

For example, you say intel don't support IDE on their chipsets, but this is from the readme (chipset driver)
G/P965, G/P35, X38/X48 etc. chipsets no longer have an IDE controller in them hence the use of addon controllers (JMicron & the like) on mobos.
