As David said, not through iTunes/Music Match.

However, if you open the iPod up as a hard-drive in My Computer and select "Show hidden files" you can access them.

Oh, and don't forget that you can get £25 off a 20GB iPod if you're a university student or a teacher through Apple's website.

The etching is, as it says, etched, Its similar to the serial number and Apple logo that is etched on the back, so it wont come off.
As for transferring music, you cant do it using iTunes, as David said, but it can be done using other software. ephod lets you on pc, and and i think iPod Access on mac does.

Nice program ive found is sharepod, you just pop it on the ipods main dir and allows you to grab and transfer music from the ipod. Might be ideal for you. The advantage of keeping the program on the ipod is you dont need to install any software on anyone's computer. Check it out.

i got laser etching on the back of my ipod, its not really laser etching more like a rough transfer on the back of the ipod, it does scratch easily which is a shame. there is an app called EphPod which is free to use which is always a bonus and a lot nicer to use than the sluggish iTunes

Think carefully before you get the iPod etched. Like, how easy will it be to sell it on if you get your name or a personal message etched on to it?

Like others have said, there are apps that let you grab music off your iPod. The latest version of iTunes for MacOsX will let you do it too (although the last version for Os9 didn't) so newer versions for PC may or may not.

1: There is more chance of you scratching the nice silver back than marking the etch.
2: Another thumbs up for Ephod here, what I don't like though is that if you have to re-format your system and re-install the I-Pod software you seem to lose the music on it. (or at least I do )

Thats becuase ITunes syncs one way only..i.e you connect an ipod full of music to a pc with Itunes with no music and your pod will get wiped...You need to remeber before installing ITunes on your PC either do as said above and show hidden files and folders if you have your pod set as removable drive and drag the music files back, or get some third party software that enables you to copy music back to your pc from your ipod..http://www.yamipod.com for example

as far as i'm aware, if you choose to have laser engraving, you cannot send your iPod back, the reason i didn't get mine done.

You don't need any software, just select to view hidden files and copy everything off that you wish to. Pretty easy and free to do.
