any idea how huge the macintosh market share was in the late 1980s?
the reason given by steve jobs in interview for not supporting wma et al is that the itunes music store currently has a 70% market share, and that the other offerings are therefore irrelevant - so it's okay for them to remain proprietary.
it's gonna bite them in the ass, sooner or later
never heard of the amiga then? or the speccys or c64? I'm certain they had *slightly* more market share than apple did..
Both the C64 and Amiga had the "Biggest selling home computer" tags in their day.

Commodore had the home market pretty much sewn up in the end, and *could* have ended the ibm pc compatible platform before it even had a chance if it hadn't rested on it's laurels, but it let microsoft catch up, didn't attempt to capture the business sector, and really didn't use it's extremely talented engineers until it was too late.. In fact as a testiment to the tenacity of the user base, you can still buy amiga hardware and software even today..
Apple have *never* had much of a home market share, they were always too expensive until fairly recently, and the first macintosh sold so badly ($2500 price tag can't have helped) Steve Jobs was asked to leave. (where he then joined NeXT - and got some interesting ideas..)

ok, so i exaggerated a little. apple had a 20% market share in the late 80s. the macintosh was still a rousing success - problems appeared from compacency in the early ninties, when the ibm pc eroded their share to about 3%, where it remains today. it was bought by people who wanted a computer, not a toy like the C64.
they were still shot down from a strong market position to insignificance by cockiness. my argument is that the same will happen again.
I have a 40G Ipod and i must admit as nice as it looks its in no way worth the price they charge for it. I am seriously thinking of selling it and getting an Iriver. Im not really fussed about the looks anymore as it has just come to my attention that no one can see through my pocket DOH!
Aaahh, you mean worldwide market share..
I'm guessing the sold a lot more in the US then because no bugger had one here lol
The Apple peak was 12% of the market in 1992 with 2,500,000 sold, compared to the 2002 figure of 2.27% and around 3,000,000 units sold..
but yes, if apple doesn't remember the mistakes of the past then they will repeat them..
