Tell that to apple - they designed them to be unremovable...Originally Posted by bertie

thought the most modern zen took normal AAs (rechargable thou)?
if you listen to the sound, apple want $250 to replace the battery - the ipods are only $300ish new! bloody ripoff

there are a couple of reasons for this.
first of all, the ipod is a best seller, hence they get more exposure than anyone else
second of all, it's a cult item not an mp3 player. what do i mean? every portable media playback device ever has been placed in an inside coat pocket, with the headphone lead through the top, so you can listen to music
the ipod is suposed to be publically displayed (got armband?), along with that dangling white headphone cord, so everyone can look at you and say "wow, he must really be cool". this creates an ENORMOUS level of animosity amongst PC enthusiasts, who generally believe that FUNCTION should be considered.
let's not forget that apple have had a silly number of problems with their products recently - dead batteries, overheating cases, dead logic boards, blotchy paint...
stories appear because they're relevant. you think nobody should've mentionned the IBM DeathStar issues?

and expensive replacements are nothign new. apple charge $1000 for a new screen on an antique ibook, with the new model retailing for $999
then again, seen the cost of replacement parts for, say, compaq kit? £350 for a k6-2 450, £1600 for a screen...
aye i know laptop parts are expensive, but screens aren't meant to 'wear out' whereas batteries are - hence why laptop batteries are nearly always user-replaceable. my old ultraslim laptop was a writeoff cos teh screen broke, fortunatly my insurance gave me £1800 for a new one

Apple now offer a battery replacement service for $99 and a second year's battery warrenty for $59.
Anyone ever tried buying a new battery for their mobile phone? They only last ~2 years and new batteries cost £80+.
There are so many ipods around...I havent seen them all, but you see the trademark white earphones and wires danging out of everyones pockets...lol

where did you get that figure from aaron - you can pick up aftermarket nokia batteries for a tenner easily, and origionals for under £30

i'm not disputing it when batteries are readily available and interchangeable - i.e. a £40+ battery is _FINE_ if it's something you can buy easily. what I dispute is requiring $250 of return-to-base (which Apply have now replaced with a $99 charge to prevent the somewhat messy backlash). Even on the early (irreplacable) creative models their return-to-base charge has been reasonable
