    Question Itunes Alternative...

    Hi,
i have just bought a Ipod Shuffle 512mb off a mate
only thing is i do NOT want Itunes... one of my other mates has a 4gb Ipod mini and runs linux... now he uses a third party piece of softwate which i cannot remember the name off... now what I am wondering is: is there a suitable Itunes alternative? (i do not need to purchase tracks etc...)
or should i simply rename the tracks and dump them onto it when its running as external storage?

    cheers for any insights

    keef

    Because he runs linux?

iTunes can be made to sort-of work with the crossover plugin (a comercial wine implemention), but from what I have heard it is quite unstable.

His mate runs linux, I can't see that he does, otherwise he would be using the same software as his mate.

If you use winamp you can get a plugin to let you manage your ipod songs.

Yes there are alternatives, such as CopyPod which I used for a few mins until i realised I had no reason to.

iTunes is a great bit of software, less so on windows (the mac version is better imho, less system intensive) but even so it's great. I switched to it before I got my iPod last year, mainly because of it's music sharing ability over the uni network - you could listen to other ppls music without needed to have it yourself, which was great. (even better with a certain plugin that I think has now died)

The playlist manager is great, i love the way it organises my music folder, get's me a free single every week, so easy to browse my entire music collection that I have ripped by artist/album/track etc etc, I find it so much easier to use than winamp. It's like what WMP should have been..Ripping CDs to MP3 is easy too, some ppl think that you can't rip to mp3 with it but you can, thats just a myth
