    iPod Linux...

Hey guys, did a quick search which didnt seem to reveal anything...

Have any of you put iPL on your iPods? I was gonna give it a go with my nano but it looks like the windows installer only works for the older generations.

Im getting the knoppix live cd and i'll give it a go later on, the ability to watch videos (uncompressed) on it (aswell as play games such as Doom) seems pretty awesome.

Ill try to get some pictures up if i actually manage it

Well its pretty cool took me a couple of attempts as i rebooted knoppix halfway through (cos it cocked up) and lost a load of files which obviously hadnt been saved.

Only got iDoom on there at present, gonna pop some more things on now

Whats the flexibility of the 4th Gen linux like on the iPod? Like what is possible? I don't really fancy touching the ipod as I'm planning to buy a two year extended warranty, but if its worth the gamble (if it breaks any chance of a warranty in the first place) then I would dive into it myself too

    progress on the 4g ipod

AFAIK if you install iPodLinux on your 4th gen iPod and it all goes smoothly (as it did on my nano), you get all the features of the podzilla Interface but just in grayscale.

You can play doom in greyscale if you really want to. They are still trying to implement other music formats - ogg vorbis to name one of them, which could be cool if they manage to get them running at realtime.

Also I doubt you will break your ipod as if anything goes wrong you can download the iPod firmware restore program from the apple site which effectively wipes the ipod and factory-restores it

Check out their forums for more info I guess - here

I'll try to get a couple of pictures of my nano before i have to head back to uni

I have tried this on my 20gig 4g Ipod, works great

Same as the nano really, just that it's in black and white, and my screen isn't going to snap next time i touch it

Installation was easy, found a 4g installer for the mac, formatted my ipod (to make sure) and then did a manual backup via firewire (pretty easy really, means I can be almost certain of not bricking my ipod) and ran the installer. Can now choose between linux or the official apple software at bootup, access linux shell, doom, tetris etc etc..pretty cool if not that useful really..
