*waits for student loan to appear in september*
I would like a macbook pro, but I don't need one. I use my current iBook G4 for mobile purposes and dvd-playback, with light gaming (wow and Civ3 mainly)..so don't need one.
So i'm sorely tempted to get one of these new macbooks in a few months, once the bugs are fewer and I have my student loan lol. Only thing that concerns me is the build quality of these, the build quality of my current iBook is pants compared to a fully fledged powerbook, and I'm not too keen on shelling out close to a grand for a reasonably specced macbook when I can get a top-of-the-range pro using my studentness for a cool 1500 (inc applecare - price from an over-the-phone quote)..
Will have to wait and see I guess
The MBP should be even cheaper than that with HE discount (not educational) and then you also have the added bonus of free 3 years warranty therefore no need to buy AppleCareOriginally Posted by Spud1
Well I just ordered a Macbook todayGave in to temptation.
I managed to sell my old G4 for 400quid, so that pays for most of the new one. I went for the basic model - got it for 700quid including 3 years apple care =) Love student discount.
I'll stick some more ram in it myself when I can afford it, for light use it should manage with 512 for now I think...
Should be here in a couple of weeks, can't wait lol
I thought you were a student? The basic model which includes apple care as standard should only be £643Originally Posted by Spud1
Ah no you need the apple care on top of it to make it 3 years of worldwide cover. I checked with several apple sales staff, all who told me that I needed to buy the apple care if I wanted the cover...apple care is not free for students (even HE students), its just heavily discounted (50 quid is a lot cheaper than 200)
If however you can point me to some documentation or somethign that says otherwise please do, as I would love to be wrong here and then I can argue with apple for a bit about it lol.
Oh really, I was told that £50 deal wasn't really AppleCare and if you look in the applecare section, even under the HE store it's like £200ish weird.Originally Posted by Spud1
I'll try and dig out som documentation saying that aplecare is free to students ...
Yeah the 50quid deal is over-the-phone only afaik
I would love to be wrong though lol, i've not got the finance paperwork through yet so can still amend/cancel the order if needbe..

"10.1.1 All Apple-branded desktop and portable computer products shall be subject to a 36 calendar month warranty period commencing from the date of delivery."
you are correctnice one
I phoned up apple, argued with the sale staff (who didnt believe me) and then got put through to a supervisor, who checked out the info.
He came back to tell me that I don't need the applecare - we get it free as uni students.!
So apple mis-sold it to me over the phone, their sale staff don't have a clue about this..great. He cancelled the applecare from my order (saving me 50odd quid yey) so all sortedOnly problem now is that this could **** up my credit agreement, so I need to speak to MBNA now and sort that out, hopefully it won't delay my order...
Same kinda thing happened to me, bought something from apple using the mbna student loan, price of item dropped within one week of purchase. I dont think u will get mbna to ammend the loan amount, Apple will just end up sending u a cheque instead for the £50.Originally Posted by Spud1
I've taken the executive decision to cancel my order, and get the macbook from an apple store instead
I spoke with some very helpfull Apple US guys on the phone (after 8pm sales calls get redirected to the states for some reason), who suggested that as I don't need to buy the discounted apple care, I should be able to just buy the hardware from an apple store in the UK with the education discount. As it happens there is one in the Trafford Centre now (near me) and in the centre of town - both of which should offer the education discount on hardware.
So tomorrow morning I will confirm I can buy it from one of those stores, and if so, cancel my order and go get one in personThis means no credit agreement though - but my parents have offered to sub me and act as a credit agency (very kind of them
) so should be all good.
Well I have it nowgot it for the HE student price (643) from the apple store after a bit of 'discussion' with the sales people..and I can't put the thing down. Keep smiling and looking at it lol, it's sad, but if you go and buy one of these beauties you will be the same..
Just need more ram for it now, plan to upgrade to 2gig when I get paid next month..pics soon
well i have just bought mine. upgraded to 1gig of ram and got the vga adapter for £716.20 (w/ 3 years warranty cuz i am a he student- they didnt ask any questions about student id etc, just where i was etc)
can't wait
