I dont agree, just make sure its powerfull enough (i.e not a 1.2), and nice seats. Let me put it this way, an 11 year old 1.6 fiesta (£900), is a lot better to drive than an almost new 1.2 corsa (£7k). Theres not much differnce between a £1k car and a £2k car. They are usually just a year or two newer.
In terms of insurance, it depends, but for me, a 1.6 90bhp was only £100 more to insure than a 800?cc daewoo would have been (well all the <60-70bhp all cost about the same, £800).
Getting full electric is not all great. Windows is a must, but aircon on old cars will break, have clogged up filters, and generally be worse than having a fan.
BUT make sure you get nice seats. The cheap uber-mass-produced corsas, fiestas, etc.. will all have really crappy seats unless you get top of the range model (leather, very comfortable) - or a sporty model (not leather, but atleast have a much more comfortable shape than the plain ones used on rest of the range) . Mine are not leather but they atleast have a good shape and sides (important!) for better seating. On a long drive, even going at oap speeds, this is very important to be comfortable.
