its the uprated speaker system, the one below the Carver sound system

    two tweeters in door pillar
    two standard speakers in door
two larger speakers inside foorwell, just where door is attached to car.

two behind the headrests, sound comes out just above the seat, below the headrest

two big ass speakers and subwoofers behind the main part of the seat.

Fair enough, did you get Sat Nav?

I must admit the Porsche speaker system is good whether the roof is on or off, struggles a bit at 120 with the roof down though...

Oh yes I forgot about the centre.... What's the point of that? Do the head units decode ProLogic from the music or something? Or is it for a phone?

Nah no Sat nav, that still adds about 1200 to used prices

Yikes, thats more than buying a Garmin streetpilot, which is probably better than the inbuilt Sat Nav. Admittedly, you don't get the media choices you get with the Sat Nav System though

I would be replacing the head unit anyway, i miss 6Music in the car, and i also need to be able to hook my Archos to it too.

The headunit has Dolby Prologic II, and if I may say so myself, sounds pretty damn good. It gives some sense of direction to the sound - ie the band is infront of you, instead of all around you.

You can add phone preparation, but we change our phones to often, and if you use the inbuilt one, you have to have a dedicated simcard, which was something we didn't want to do...(ie BT were a pain in the arse over it, so we didn't bother)

    Head unit

Well got all the bits for my stereo replacement now.

It's amazing how different the car audio market is from the PC market. The JVC mobile audio website is very out of date. The screen i was going to get is out of production now, so i ended up with the replacement, which is actually of a higher spec and cheaper The JVC site doesn't have any mention of it though, which is weird.

    Now got the KW-AVX800

Thankfully it still supports the DAB module, and it looks like i can also daisy chain iPod and Bluetooth support in there as well. The Bluetooth module will be the next adition i think.

The best bit though is the USB mass storage support! I was going to use the AUX audio and video input for my Archos AV500, but i think i'll use the USB instead and get the head unit to play my MP3s.

the only thing this is missing is SatNav, which is a bit of a shame, but not a huge loss. I think i'll eventually get that with either my P990 or whichever phone i replace it with.

Install is going to be done tomorrow hopefully, so i'll get some photos taken and uploaded then.

Here's a few photos from the changout i did yesterday:

    http://picasaweb.google.com/neil.a.d...reoReplacement

A couple of problems with it. My digital reception is poor. I wonder if there it something up with the screen mount aerial i have, I'll need to look into that some more.

I've also now caused an airbag warning light to come on

So I'll need to have a look at that too. It's either the passenger side curtain bag or the passenger front bag, not sure, how i managed to do that

Other than that the replacement went well. There is a lot more room to work in the MK5 than there was in the MK4. The DAB decoder box and the extra cabling slips down behind the air con controls without any problems.

There are a few more things I'd like to do with the head unit since it has the capabilities. If i connect it to the reverse light switch, it will automatically turn on a reversing camera. Which is cool. And I need to do something about the parking break sensor too.

Haven't tried the USB host connection yet, but i can see me using that more than CDs or AV input.

But the best thing is it sounds a lot better than the factory fit unit. Not had a chance to really crank it up, but i think it'll handle it pretty well when i do.

    thread bump

Hauled the head unit out this evening to try and sort the DAB issue. Looks like i have. I had the DAB module set to use an areal without a booster, i should have had it on. Reception appeared imediately. So all is good with that.

I didn't bother sorting the FM reception, i'll do that when i get the Bluetooth module and set that up. Same with the parking break sensor for DVD/Video playback.

Sounds like i will need to do something with the speakers though. It is a lot better than the stock head unit, but the back speakers rattle when i have it quite high. Might be able to get away with playing with the speaker mounts and grills, but i'm pretty sure i'll end up replacing them at some point anyway.

    thats it for now

Looking good, was it easy to install?

I notice theres a lot of boxes/wires behind it, is that just hanging loose or is it velcroed somewhere?

Yeah, it was pretty easy to install, easier than two single DINs in the old Golf.

Everything is just hanging loose, but i have taped up the connectors and tidied some of the cables up a bit. There is a decent sized void behind the air-con controls so everything slides down there without too much trouble. I think the dole is also slightly deeper than a regular DIN slot.

The oly head unit was mounted from the front, so didnt need a back stop, smae goes for the JVC unit.

The regular GTI is 200bhp. There is a 30th aniversary special edition that is 230bhp. It revs really quickly too, not much of a turbo lag.

Very, very nice to drive. Smooth and quiet. You can toddle along at 30 in 6th gear without too much trouble too.

cool, It got a good review and what not a vast improvement on the last model as i said.

I think theres an anniversary edition round here somewhere with an odd badge and r32 style exhausts. But if you wanted 230bhp im sure it wouldn't be hard with yours.

6 speed boxes are soo good i couldn't go back to 5..

OH quick trivia are mini coopers 5 speed? or 6?
