    Buying Car Tax

Right, so I've finally bought a car. The only thing is, the tax has just run out on it. How can I tax it so I can drive it away? I'm not the registered owner at the moment.

    Thanks

can you get the existing registered keeper to tax it for you?

I take it that you have already insured it to drive it away?

Yeah I have insured it. The problem is, the tax disc will be sent to the present owner. Not me.

Can you not get it at a post office? Then you'd have it straight away without sending.

Do you still have the log book ? or tear off strip (i cant remember what it is ..v5? ) Take this or log book , the current MOT and your Insurance to the post office and they will tax it for you .

I meant for getting it done tonight . I need to go pick the car up. I've put a deposit down for it, so I could get the tax and insurance sorted.

You wanted to tax the car tonight ? No way , as far as i know either going into the post office or doing it by post are the only two ways. Cant you arrange to get the papers needed , pay for car and get keys , leave it where it is for tonight , then take the documents into the post office first thing ?

Ok, which documents do I need? I've got the V5 new owners slip, and the keys to it. It's been left on the guys driveway until tomorrow.

You also need the insurance cert and the MOT. It would be legal to drive it to the post office to obtain the Tax, unless its currently SORN (i imagine it is if the tax is already expired)

Damn. Do I need to wait to get my certificate in the post then? I've got an email from liverpool victoria confirming my cover and giving a policy number. It also says I can download a document of insurance online, but cant find it on the website.

Yes you do need the insurance certificate (original), i am sure a copy will not be accepted. You will need the V5 and the MOT as well. Good luck !

V reg Fiat Bravo 80 SX 16v. Cost me £900 with some haggling. Has got 12 months MOT and FSH. Mint condition. I'll get some pics tomorrow when it's light .

Not bad for a first car . It's got loads of toys in it, and a decent CD player.

Nice Passat. Have you sold your old one then?

You can buy tax online, but to use the car without a tax disc is fineable (£100 i think)

The post office wont make your tax disc, they just collect the fee and send it on to dvla... the disc will always arrive by post.

however you do it, you really need to get the logbook sent off first, else it will go to the old address..

I think you mean Fiat Good price - I looked at a Punto for a friend, and it was, how shall we say, a little bit dodgy, ie the brakes didn't work!! (well they did slightly with a metallic grinding scraping sound!). Ended up buying a Suzuki Swift that was practically mint!! (after looking at a rusty Clio).

No, haven't sold the Passat yet, want to keep my current (17") wheels and will need to swap them over when I have both. Then advertise it for sale... (most likely on autotrader) I keep discovering new toys in the Sport Passat that I wasn't even aware of (Rain sensing wipers is the most recent discovery )

PS - you might like to join http://www.fiatforum.com/ - seems very good (I joined because my dad has a Fiat! sad I know!)
