    New 07 Vauxhall (rental) experience ...

    Lets just say my car had an unfortunate but non life threating incident.

    I've been driving a Astra since Friday. Its got 2k miles on the clock and its the 1.8i job and its due back tomorrow when i get my Octavia back tomorrow. A few things that really suprised me. The bad things first....

    Indicators, OMG they are awful in the new car, they need constant correction on motorways and they are far too sensitive, if you see an astra flipping between left and right indication you'll now know why. If they don't indicate at all they have given up the indicators are TOO sensitive by far especially at motorway speed.

    Clutch, now this is definitely personal taste, but this car has NO clutch, the biting point is just about the top of everest and its completely pointless. I use my clutch as part of the power control and ability to make use of engine braking etc. (whether its right or wrong) I hate this car's setup.

    The boot, how much smaller and inconvient is this one compared to the last model?, seriously hinder when putting anything in the back.

    Thirsty!!!. Seriously 3800 RPM at 80 it drinks petrol on motorways actually making it less efficent than my Octavia VRS without me running around madly.

    The good points.....
    The lights are AWESOME!!!, driving home at midnight on country roads, it felt like i was driving in sunlight. Beats everything i've ever driven at night or been a passenger in.

    Its new and the stearing response and feeling inside the car is fantastic, Seats are really great and the instrument layout is actually really great and logical.

    Don't expect me to be buying one tho, GIVE ME MY CAR BACK

    Drove a Signum a couple of months back...hated the indicators on that...

    Drove an 07 A4 yesterday, didn't notice any problems with the indicators... Nice car too, though a day isn't really enough time to get much of a feel for it.

    had 1 recently whilst my car was in & hated the interior design.
    As for the car itself it did the job but I wasn't overly impressed - don't think that I would buy 1.

    We had one as a hire car at work a few months back and we both found exactly the same issue with those bloody indicators !! The next time we hired a car we got given a Saab, with the proper traditional system

    I can't think of anything worse than those one-touch indicators. They are awful.

    I had an 07 plate Corsa on hire and I just couldn't get used to them. I hated everything about this car. The steering was shocking, absolutley no feedback through the wheel, suspension was awful, and it had the smallest boot that I had ever seen. Must say that I preferred the old Corsa model.

    I know this thread was about an Astra, but I just had to say this.

    They introducted them on the last-model vectra. And yes, i've driven down the motorway with them flashing this way and that as i fight to turn them off. Great example of how someone completely breaks a perfect, intuitive design.

    You can get used to them - it's about how much pressure you put on them and you do start eventually just giving them a very light dab when you want the three blips and a stronger push when you want continuous.

    But it is quite easy to get into endless left-right-left loops as you try and cancel after pushing too hard.

    (For those who've been lucky enough not to experience them, the idea is that instead of pushing an indicator and it staying down in the position you've pushed, the one-touch ones always return to the centre position. Instead there is a soft 'stop' - if you just push lightly and let go the indicator flashes three times then stops. If you push harder past the soft stop and let go the indicators continue to flash until the steering auto-stops it, or you dab in the opposite direction. Problem is if you push too hard (past the soft stop) in the other direction you start continuously indicating the other way!)

    In this instance, reading the manual doesn't help. The concept is dead simple.. the implementation still catches me out whenever I drive one of the work cars..
