    Re: Scariest Moment Driving?

Yeah it does shake you up doesn't it.

I had another near miss in that car around xmas on some black ice. luckily i was being careful and doing about 15 mph at the time but it still threw me into a 1080 spin down an icey hill..that was more fear of damaging the car though as I knew i was safe lol

managed to save it though and keep on going..must have looked like quite a fancy james bond move if there were any on lookers

    Re: Scariest Moment Driving?

My scariest moment was a year or so back in the Trooper.
On the way back from Truelfoot with the Cav on the back of the trailer.
Just before you hit the Taymar bridge coming back theres a big downhill that goes round to the right.
Came off the roundabout, inside lane, about 40mph, felt the backend go really light as we were going down the hill, suddenly the whole thing got really outta shape and we ended up snapping from left to right, Trooper was on two wheels at one point with me looking out of my side window at the road.
God knows how we didnt flip or loose the Cav but we were all over the road, both lanes and in the small patch of gravel just before the central reservation and then managed to get it straight and pulled over into the large loads lane just before the roundabout at the bottom of the hill...
Kids (3 and 10 at the time) who were asleep were in histerics, as was the missus, I checked everyone was alright and then sat there and said, "Right, big question is, where the f'k is the Cav" turned round and it was still there on the trailer, all be it a few inches over to one side from where it originally was...

Luckily the road was empty as when we were on the way up the hill someone had flashed me to let me know my rear numberplate on the trailer was dragging on the road, fixed that and the traffic we were in had all moved off, if we hadn't stopped we'd of hit someone no doubt as a bunch of traffic had built up due to the hill we came up just before the roundabout...

Would of looked good on camera...

STAFFSMIKE....NO WONDR YOU LOVE YOUR IGNIS!

THAT THING IS AMAZING....Am I the only one to be 100% impressed with that car's rigidity?

    Thats incredible.

I dont want ANYONE thinking that all modern cars can do that....trust me....they can't!

I will strongly suggest Ignis's to people bases on strength now!

    Re: Scariest Moment Driving?

Yeah it did stand up to it really well since the best i can figure it rolled around 5 times. the first one was a quite a big landing as it jumped up and over the hedges. Thats how the piller buckled on the drivers side i think.

All i remember is swearing lots as it happened and gripping for dear life lol

but yeah once i'd taken a breath i just climbed out the window and walked to the road (once i'd worked out which direction that was) and a nice girl stopped for me to call the emergency services etc.. lost my phone in the field until she called it so i could find it

    Re: Scariest Moment Driving?

I have just the one to relate.Back in the late 80's when I was in sales on the road, doing 60-70 thousand a year....

Coming South on M6 over Manchester Ship Canal bridge (the old one) in lane 3 doing a reasonable lick. High winds on that day. Traffic Northbound very congested but moving quite fast.

A car got picked up by a gust as a big wagon passed on the inside and it flipped over the central barrier and landed on the road just behind me.

I got away scot free, but am fairly certain the 8 car pile up I left behind me had some serious injuries
    Cheers, David

    Re: Scariest Moment Driving?

My scariest moment (well moments) happened within the last month.

The first was a few weeks ago, I was driving home after seeing some friends, and it had been raining earlier in the day, so the road wasnt wet as such but still greasy and near to me theres a hill with a sharpish right hander, which in the dry can be done at 40 ish if ur brave enough. But i was coming down the hill at roughly 30-35, and was just going round the corner, when the back end just went, no warning or anything, luckily the road was empty coming the other way, and i managed to quickly apply some lock to the left and give it a bit of power to bring the back end towards me. But by the time the car was in a straight line again I was pretty much on the other side of the road!

The other happened a fair while back, again was driving home and it was quite light (1-2am?) and was driving along a major b-road, when all of a sudden I rounded a corner and there was a fallen tree slap bang in my lane. I was going quite briskly and there really wasnt enough space for me to be able to brake and stop before ploughing into it, so the only option I had was to swerve round it which I did, and to my suprise there was very little body roll, and the car seemed to be stuck to the road with glue. Still scared the **** out of me though!

    Re: Scariest Moment Driving?

Someone nearly hit me the other day while I was on my way to work at about 5.25am, they were pulling out from from behind a bus that was parked in front of a side road and just kept coming, rather than edging out slowly, while leaning forward to peer round it like anyone with any sense would. I can't believe I was doing more than about 30-35 as I'd just pulled out of the previous road myself. I hit the brakes and instantly locked at least one (possibly all) of the wheels on the wet road, before letting off and snapping the wheel to the right. I'm not sure if I let off before I snapped the wheel, I like to think my instincts were good enough. Anyway the car gripped and jumped a foot or so to the right which was just enough to miss them, though it must have been by inches. It wouldn't have been a bad accident, but I daresay it would have written off my mum's Clio which is only worth a few hundred quid. Got the blood pumping a bit.

My scariest two moments on the bike have not been the two times I crashed it- those were just expensive (and on the first occasion a bit painful- the scars from my grazes have not faded much nearly a year later). No, these were near misses which happened in the same week when I was rushing to work, again very early in the morning, and very near each other between Elmer's End and Shirley. The first time I was going through a traffic light junction where there's a slight compression, doing about 50 on a damp road- and the front slipped a bit making the bike wiggle. Must have been a bit of diesel. Thing is I was just in normal clothes and if I'd gone up the road at 50mph I would have made a serious mess of myself. The second time, just up the road, again doing about 50, a Mercedes E-Class estate pulled out of a side road without looking and just kept coming. All I could do was try and steer round him. In the end I missed him, don't know how- another few inches and my left leg would have been the first point of impact. Which I reckon would have been quite serious.

After that I got some proper protective kit, and started leaving a bit earlier so I didn't have to rush. I'm a disorganised man and I hate getting out of bed though, so it's not always easy. It seems many of the accidents on this page have been caused by driving too fast and rushing. I'm as guilty of this as anyone, but try and leave yourself plenty of time, and if not, try and remember that it's better to arrive late than not at all!

    Re: Scariest Moment Driving?

Well said rave in that last paragraph, due to being in a rush I caused the write off of my car I hadn't owned to long. The more time you leave the better really when travelling also allows for traffic!
