Penalty for no front number plate?

I have heard that if you use an illegally sized front number plate you could be hit with a £60 fine and 3 points, but not having a front plate at all (keep it in the boot, "it just fell off h'officer") can only result in a £30 fine. I've been trying to find some evidence to support this but not having much luck so far. Does anyone know any facts?

This is one of those laws that isn't really policed much. You can be done for it but notmally only if you've done something stupid and the copper wants any reason to pull you over. I've seen many cars with little or odd shaped number plates and no-one I know with them has been done for it.

Worse are the bikes that have postage stamps on the back, those are just stupid.
