quick update...
got all my linkage parts through last week, when put together it looked a little like so...
Unfortunately it still didn't go back into reverse. It did do once after a little rage was unleached upon the gearstick which leads me to suggest the bush on the stick itself was worn...
After looking at the bush it was definitely worn on the reverse side. I dont think the bush is pushing the turret far enough over so its not going into gear.
Lets hope anyway, new bush at 3 quid will arrive on Thursday
well what can i say... one step forwards two steps back
started off by fitting my new bush to my gearstick and low and behold i can now find reverse
So i think why not give it a little run.
Running fine until the coolant light comes on so i quickly park it up.
It seemed to have lost quite a lot so i refil her up and give it a while. I thought it may have been a big airlock so i tried the normal bleeding process for these engines (run up to temp with expansion tank cap off) and did that fine. The guage went up to normal temp so i turn it off and try again with a little run.
This time the water temp guage is going up and down like a woman of the nights knickers so i park it up again. After 10 seconds of the car being parked up theres a large pop and a woosh of water
the lower pipe of the rad water pump had blown off.
Now theres one of four causes.
1) Blocked Radiator
2) Big Airlock
3) Dodgy rad water pump
4) Blown headgasket
The first two i will test tomorrow by sticking a hose into the rad and making sure water is flowing freely.
the 3rd i doubt very much as there was warm water going to the rad.
The 4th would be a massive blow and i would literally go ape sh** at anybody who is in the near vicinity as it was supposedly working fine when bought.
So tonight she's looking sad again and I await the tests tomorrow.
Wish me luck!
Bit of a bummer m8e but keep yer chin up and you'll get there in the end
I don't know this engine much, but what's "rad water pump" if a hose has blown off either it wasn't tight enough or you need a new rad pressure cap.
Have you considered the thermostat?
Good luck.
Quick Update:
Having flushed through the entire system we have found the following...
1) The radiator isn't blocked
2) The thermostat works fine
3) The way it was filled meant there was probably a big airlock.
So after trial and error making sure that we could fill the system and bleed it properly, the system was emptied and filled with the correct anti freeze - water mix and bled.
Yesterday when I took it for a run the temperature guage was behaving itself, there was no white smoke to speak of and it didn't lose any coolant.
Only time will tell (will take it for another run later) but its looking faily likely we may have finally cracked it
Few things to do like just adjust the clutch (bite is at the top of the throw) and wear the brakes in but apart from that shes about ready to stick through her MOT
The only thing i would be slightly worried about is if shes burning a bit of oil, theres hardly any smoke to speak of so hopefully it will be totally burnt off soon.
So close to getting her back on the road
Once shes on the road the real noticable improvements will be made (Alloys refurbed, kit fitted, repray, vinyls etc etc)
Finally feels like some temporary good news
Told ya
I'm sure you've already said it, but "Woo!" and also "Yay!" etc....

Quick adjustment and she goes back into reverse again now!
Everything seems to be running a hell of a lot better. Hopefully good enough for a MOT now
for those of you who are missing the pictures heres how she stands tonight..
washed a little bit as ive just booked it in for its MOT on Saturday so wish me luck
Been running it again today and all smoke seems to have disappeared so happy with that now and the gears are behaving now
Let us see how it goes!
Well it failed its MOT
Fortunately only on very minor things (small fuel leak around pump needs some hoses changing and two light bulbs)
Unfortuantely I wont be able to get it re-tested now till next weekend so it wont be on the road till then.
At least the signs are good
Quick update
The bulbs were both ok and after a quick fiddle they were both dodgy connections :/
They have been sorted though!
Anyway to the fuel leak! The two pipes to be changed were prepared...
and changed.
Unfortunately on trying to start it up there was a lot of petrol peeing out the back of the car!
On further inspection the diaphragm pipe had totally ruptured due to rust!
Not good!
It's possible that it was a small hole around this pipe that was leaking before and removing the old pipe ruptured the outer casing
Luckily I had a spare!
Still rusty as hell but no holes
Two very rusty nuts later (ooer) and were back in business!
Ready for the re-test next weekend and should pass with flying colours now
