Why are cars now wearing Glasses?

Okay I'm really starting to see a growing trend of cars wearing glasses and I'm getting to the point where it really has got to the point where i'm wondering why?.

Saab Great Britain, Saab 9-5 Saloon, Introduction

Apologies for picking on Saab web site , Zak but its the one that demonstrates my point.

WHY oh why do car manufacturers want to make their cars wear glasses. They look horrible, they look worse in real life up close in person too.

I just don't see the point.

But its not just saab, iirc i've seen a Pug with it too and i've seen about 5 different ones over the last few days and i just have to say NO!.

    Works ok on the 9-3
They've over-egged the Eric Morcombe look on the 9-5

This is not a new thing though, Toyota were at it years ago.
First they give us one of my fave rally cars: this one

I was thinking about those stupid chrome bits earlier when I saw one, it looks like kind of thing a chav would attempt to try and make his car faster. To me the black is possibly worse, until you I got close and remebered what the chrome looked like on the same model I though it had black electrical tape around the join between the car and the lights to stop it falling out, leaking or something.
