And then you bought the same car again
Nice wheels you've had/you have there...
Currently in an E91 320d (quite dull), previously had (in reverse order) an Impreza, an Elise, a TT, a few MX-5's and other stuff less interesting (Golf TDi x 3, A4 TDi, 323f V6, Nova x 2, Citroen AX - first car)...
Somewhere there's a thread in which we all posted our car history...
found!
how did I forget the '97 Astra LS TD???
HI there
Granted in the rain a Vectra VXR will be easier to drive fast, but thats all.
In the rain its more down to driver skill than machinery, a good smooth driver will leave almost anything even if they are only in say a basic BMW 325i or Mondeo ST220.
However put equally matched drivers in my Mustang and a Vectra VXR, the Mustang is still gonna muller it, I've driven both the Mustang has more outright grip even the wet and it weighs less too all which equal greater corner speed.
Also Vectra VXR does understeer, I've driven the whole VXR range, amongst lots of other machinery on road and on track days and there is far far better FWD handling cars available and when it comes to RWD cars they are just leagues better in the handling stakes.
Watch these videos of a Mustang with adjustable suspension setup (same as mine) but stock brakes and only circa 350BHP:-

Think that pretty much proves its more down to driver skill than anything else but it is also proof that a Mustang can indeed corner and very well too.
I love Mustangs. I think they're one of the best looking cars on the road, certainly for the money.
But having driven a standard GT and a Roush modified 'stang, I was left very disappointed with the handling. The Saleen is probably much better, but I'm still put off by that live rear axle. It's just a sad cost-saving measure on what should be a performance car. But then you realise, the base model is a £13,000 car, about what you'd spend on a Ford Fiesta in the UK, and suddenly it starts to make a lot more sense. Think of it as like a Toyota Celica. Pretty looks on a fairly average car. But with RWD and a V8.
@ Gibbo: i see your point in those videos, it is a good car, but the handling there is no-where near a European standard, i don't care if it's modified, even with all the fully adjustable suspension you could buy a European car for the same money as the Saleen + mods and it'll easily beat it round any track (unless it's a NASCAR track, which is really just useless, horrible and pathetic)
and look how early he has to brake for the 3rd last corner, after the long straight..
a european car would brake about half the distance away from the corner.
if they got rid of the 'live rear axle' then it would be a much better car, but at the end of the day; it's American, and American cars just can't go round a corner without wrapping itself round a tree or a post, or at best, ending up in a huge cloud of smoke..

HI there
Have you ever driven on a track day, because from what you have posted says to me you have very little experience when it comes to driving a car on the road let alone a track. The brakes on his car are standard which are the same as a Mondeo, apart from larger disc but are pretty much the same. On track any car with standard brakes will suffer which he is running, standard setups tend to over-heat and get fade after 2-3 laps.
You say it cant corner, then care to explain how its catching EVO's, Supras, 911's actually through the corners then and overtaking them?
So which European car can you buy then thats practically brand new with 450-550BHP, adjustable suspension, RWD, decent looks and rare for circa 20-25k?
The fact you think that removing the live rear axle would make it a much better car says you dont know much about cars or suspension setup. A live rear axle has no weakness on a smooth racetrack, thats why stuff like caterhams and westfields have them which by the way handle awsomely. Adding IRS would only help over poor road surfaces in putting power down.
The videos show a Mustang catching a lot of European and Japanese cars up through corners and passing them, certainly seems to handle very well to me and stopping is OK for what is a standard brake setup.
HI there
considering the way the mustang was able to fly past every car on the track down the straights as though they were standing still, i don't think there is any reason to suggest that the other cars were trying any harder in the corners.
