not only are they getting bashed by cars, I saw a magpie on Sunday attacking a smaller, flufflier, brown bird.
The sound was pretty horrendous, but the sight of it afterwards was even more grim

Oh dear. How fast were you going when you hit it?
And I've told you before: http://forums.hexus.net/1694385-post8.html
A mate of mine once had a deer jump on the bonnet of the Astra that he had at that time.... he was driving along a country road and it decided to jump the hedge at the wrong time and made a fair old mess of his car
And as for birds, I saw a crow come off second-best with a doubledecker bus one day - the crow was stood on the road as the bus was approaching (in a 40mph area) and decided to take off across to the opposite side of the road to which I was on with a couple of other cars... so the crow then thought it would be a better idea to reverse direction and head back across the road from the side it originated and promptly met the front of said bus....
Bit of a resurrection - had an altercation (of sorts) with a pheasant today. In that I hit it at 60. Doesn't appear to be any damage - it was on the road at the time, I swerved as much as I could towards the nearside, but it decided at the last minute to dodge into the path of my car. Went under the offside wheels, so in theory it will have missed hitting anything important on its way through.
Anything in particular I should look for? Had a look at the front of the car, no obvious damage.
Also, I didn't realise how many feathers you could get off a pheasant in such a short space of time. There was a huge cloud of them when I checked the rear view mirror.
I've had a few altercations with birds, 2 memorable ones, 1 pheasant that I clocked still doing 30ish, which did no damage to the bumper at all but made a fair old thud.
And another, driving through one of the villages, i went through a couple of sparrows (you know how they do it, flying low and around the car), a couple of days later a friend pointed out a feather hanging down from under edge of the join between the front plastics and bumper, i tried to pull it out, it wouldn't budge, so i left it, got to college, tried again and it came straight out, not just a feather, the whole thing, it was a bit gooey, so we left it under another mates windscreen wiper, and told him we'd found him a new bird (he'd just split up with his girlfriend of 8 or so years...).
But the best one was a squirrel (not really a bird ), two cars in front of me, a squirrel dashed out jumped against the tyre of the car and scurried back, then did it to the next car, and then to me :|
