The police were attending a BMW that was on its side in a ditch on my way home from work yesterday. I seem to see a lot of that with bimmers, and can't believe it is the car at fault. Do they instil too much confidence, egg you on to drive a bit quicker until you are over the limit, or what?
Shame, the side of the car that wasn't in the ditch looked lovely.
"Oh, that's what Rear Wheel Drive means"
But seriously, it's more that all the safety gizmo's (ie ABS, Traction Control etc) aren't as eager on a BMW, apparently the Stig says that's why BMWs always go round the TopGear track faster than they should (on paper). It makes it a much better drivers car by miles, but if you come to a BMW from a VAG Heaven Help You...

If sporty is more about the grunt than the car feedback then VAG do make some eco motorway cruisers. Audi is the obvious brand if you're after comfort, Skoda if you want a bit more feel.
But I'd certainly try out a Mondeo if it's not too big.
None of the VAG cruisers seem that great on performance/economy though. For instance the passat I'm looking at a slower, thirstier and more expensive to insure car than the 320d, the 2.5 v6 rdi isn't much faster than that and the 330d is still more economical around town, and a damn bit faster
The only Mondeo I would think about getting that compared to the BMW cars is the 2.2 TDCi and IIRC they arent that reliable with bits failing IIRC
Just resurrecting this thread to say that my poor wife had someone drive into her the other day, and insult to injury her courtesy car for the repair is a Volvo V50. The seats are awful, and given the car is almost new I guess that is as good as they will ever be
Edit to add: Reading that back it looks like I might have started anti-Volvo, but honestly I approached the car with eagerness as I always like to try driving something different.
