Anyone know a thing or two about tyre damage?

I have wheels that would cost a few quid to replace for less than a month.... and I manage to hit my first kerb!

Anyone got any experience with likely replacement? It's taken a chunk out, but it is a rim protect tyre (although the impact was a little too hard for it to save me from a scuff and a tiny kink!) so it's not gone deep enough to expose any of the banding.

with my very limited knowledge of tyres (vinyl mobility scooter tyres, same principles apply but on a smaller scale)..

any damage on the side walls - cuts, cracking, thin parts. then we replace the tyre as soon as possible. all the weight of the vehicle is pressing down onto the wheels, it travels down to the road and it then spreads outwards through the wall, any weakness there and t could go at the most inconvenient time, like when your at the end of the pier and its raining and cold and you are to tired to push it back. the side walls keep the tyre round.

as for the rim, looks like its taken off the coating to stop it rusting and it looks like there could be a sharp edge to it aswell. it could dig into the tyre and go bang!.

as i said, this is my limited knowledge of scooter tyres, hope it helped though

i would go back to the place you got them from and see what they say. its very hard judging the condition of tyres just from a photo, you need to see and feel them in the flesh.

Re: Anyone know a thing or two about tyre damage?

If it's not showing any cords then it's still "legal".

Me, I'd replace it - it's close to the beading, it's now the weakest part of that tyre and susceptible to blow outs/bulging etc - more so when you consider the car it's on and the desire to use the loud pedal.

Best advise would be to take it to a proper tyre place (ie not Kwik Fit) and ask their opinion.
