Ssangyong (Daewoo) Musso diesel? You can get them pretty cheap and they have Merc OM600 series engines which are reliable.

What you want is a bit of class. Ergo big, petrol engined barge that has depreciated massively:

I'd say ebay or autotrader. Autotrader has a few Nissan Almeras/Primeras for £300-£350. Not the most exciting of cars but should be reliable, and probably more comfortable than a Golf for a long trip.

Whatever you end up with we need many pictures!

    E34 5 Series.

Yes you could get an E36 3 series, but this is what 5's are made for

Should easily see you out there, still enough of them out there that price isnt an issue, so finding a good one with a years ticket and some tax left on won't be an issue.

Literally first find on AT. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...s/60?logcode=p

Local free ads papers was always the best place for cheap cars.

Sorry but for a drive that distance I would be more worried about reliability than price.

    Re: Finding a banger!

Your missing the point. I could just go out and buy a £5k older defender, no worries.

Its about making a banger do the 4,000 miles.

    Re: Finding a banger!

Forgot to mention, we have our Banger!

A £475 golf, which has been in the same family for 17 years. Its in surprisingly good nick, but needs a bit of love, simply things like the tick over is a bit on the fast side. However its got Tax n Mot so we're all set. Just need to pick up some spares before the trip and look at getting the decals made.

    Re: Finding a banger!

Golfs are stylish but maybe a bit unreliable? Would have gone for a Nissan Micra myself, chain engine rather than cam belt so less to go wrong and super reliable. Hope the Golf lasts the trip

In what sense? Tons of old golfs still around. My first car was one with 236k miles on the clock and was no problem. I wouldn't trust a similar age micra.
