I'd deffo recommend getting your own insurance, NCB is very important. You dont wanna get to 22/23 and not be able to afford something half decent because of the insurance.

    Honda CRX

Nah, only joking but the MK4 civic is a good car and very reliable with good performance for a small engine (either the 1.3 or the 1.4).

All are 16v engines so they have a nice wide power band which is brilliant for learners. There's a decent amount of room in the car as well as under the bonnet. The engines are actually very easy to work on and require very minimal repairs. My car has done 162k now and the original alternator has just packed in, best thing is, Honda can supply the brushes seperately so it only cost me £20.

The 1.4 engine runs on a dual carb system that allows for a good fuel distribution and good airflow at high rpm (hence good power). The ignition system is ecu controlled with 3d mapping so you get good fuel economy with good reliability and power.

And the other good thing about Hondas, everything just works and dealers are very helpful with parts. If you are in the region the guys at the Cannock Brindley dealership are very helpful.

If you want any more info give me a shout, be happy to help.

A 1.3 or 1.4 engine would be too much for a 17 yr old to insure wouldn't it?

Not too sure what insurance group the civic is in to be honest. It's pretty difficult to find out on a car that old.

Unfortunately LouG is probably right. Parkers sell an older cars rpices guide that might have the exact group in or in ring a Honda dealer as they should know. However for a 17yr old anything above 1.1 will be getting close to £1000 I'm sure.
