    Unhappy Game Over

Unfortunately at about 8pm Sunday evening I was in an accident. Thankfully nobody else was involved and I walked away. However, my car is probably a write off due to the high cost of repairing Alfa's and the likelihood that the chassis is bent.

To cut a long story short, I was on a section of dual carridge way doing 70-75 in the rain, came around a bend into a lot of standing water and started to aquaplane. The rear of the car stepped out, I corrected it, the whole thing found grip again and then snapped back sending the rear left hard into the kurb. This has left the rear left wheel at an off angle. It then jumped the kurb and sent the rear left into the near side barrier, bounced out and sent the nose heavily into the near side barrier which has damaged the whole front of the car and probably bent the chassis.

I was a passenger the whole time. Nothing I could do. I wasn't speeding, I wasn't messing about; in fact it would have been a lot more satisfying writing a car off by getting it wrong at the limit (if you see what I mean). To throw it all away in a silly accident like that is kind of dissapointing. You probably think that's sick.

Anyway, I went to the lock-up where the car's being held while the insurance people look at it, yesterday afternoon. The following pictures don't do any justice to the actual damage but they give you an idea.

I'm absolutely gutted. I loved my car; it gave me hours of fun driving it and I feel lost without it. But I've come to realise that I'm very very lucky it wasn't any more serious, especially lucky that nobody else was involved, and lucky to have had the support of the Alfa community.

It was truely a great year. I'd like to thank you all for your supportive comments during my time with the car.

    Here's to the next one

Shad, it's a shame your car's been so badly damaged; glad that you weren't though.

    bet they re build her.

Wings are pushed back, radiator must be dead, plus aircon....

but cars dont really have a "chassis" as such....the engine and front suspension is on chassis "legs" or "rails" out from the floor.

Wont be until they get her airborn that you'll know.

Is the ROOF rippled? If it is, has any folds in it, then a write off is more likely.

Can see much really from that. Any more piccies dude?

    and Shad....just for the record.

We ALL bend cars mate. It happens to the best and worst of us. Live and learn.

And you got the first bit right. You lived

Just to echo Zak's thoughts really.

I thought when you first sent the photo's that it's not quite write off material.

I've bent enough cars in my time to realise that you can pour your heart into something for it to be scrapped

You'll also realise that cars are like wimmin.......
you love them, but you can still learn to love again.

If you're like me, you'll be praying for a write off. Not because you hate the car, but you know in your heart that it will never be the same again if it's repaired.

    Thanks guys.

I don't think the roof had any creases in it, I'm sure there would be a gap around the windscreen if that was the case. Basically I told the insurance company what the damage was, they fed it into their system and it came back as probably a total loss. They are sending someone to the recovery place to look at it though obviously.

Skii, it was a long left hand bend and the water just suddenly was there. As myself and some friends who came to help observed while we were stood at the road side, lots of other people nearly ended up where I was; probably 1 in 10 cars swerved at the corner exit as they lost grip.

Zak, lots of people have been saying that. I'm not a mechanic or an engineer so I really don't know. As I said, that's just what they told me on the phone. If it is repairable, I'm going to sell it and get something smaller and cheaper to run. To re-insure myself on it will cost £2k+.

Absolutely. Not only that but it would help me to get another car sorted out quicker too.

The bit round the windscreen is bent on the left hand side at the bottom. Doesn't look an easy repair to me....

Bad luck Shad. I guess the more time and effort you put into a car, the more you have to lose by stacking it. I learnt that getting too attached to a car is bad when I had to scrap my first one, then I made the mistake of buying an MR2.
