How much did your last MOT cost you?

As title. Just had my MOT. about £310.

Had to get the handbrake fixed (replaced cables, bolted the lever down), replaced rear break cylinder (was leaking), front cv joint protective boot, front ball joint and finally the hazard light switch.

Thats on a Peugeot 106, at an independent garage. While it was a lot of stuff to be fixed it probably is quite a reasonable price.

    £20 i think.... trade price

    W reg Renault Megane Coupe

My uncle owns a garage......... The car never needed any work done to it for the MOT... When it needs something, it gets fixed there and then, I dont wait till the MOT and then decide, i better get this fixed as it may fail the MOT.

Funnily enough the handbrake went loose a couple days before mot. So we took it to the garage and then they found the leaking cylinder, the boot and the ball joint. The hazard lights switch just wouldn't stick in, so it was generally useable, so i didn't bother fixing it before. All this was done before it got taken for an MOT (to a different garage). But in any case, its an old car, so things crop up every now and then.

    'Bout 200 quid

Cost of MOT, some new sidelights, new rear shocks, rear drums, shoes. Didn't really need them doing, but they hadn't been changed in a while and I believe in fixing stuff before it breaks..

    Price of the MOT.....

Being an ex MOT tester mean I generally replace stuff long before it needs replacing. Prevention better than cure.

Also means if Kwik-rip-off try to blag themselves some work, they're in for a world of pain......

Mum's fiasco was £180, but that was a full service on top of the MOT.

£100 last time, just needed a new rear ball joint.

The time before though:£400. Both sills needed welding up. And the time before that: £600. The rear brakes needed a complete overhaul, including refurb calipers etc.

    /nit picker mode ON

MOT cost is MOT cost. Its a test. They vary in price at a tad..but any other work is ancilliary.

All the other stuff should have already been done, cos if it needed doing you were driving a deteriorated car in the first place.

    /nit picker mode OFF

So how come they STILL scare me even though I know lots of MOT testers?

Cos I ask them to tear into it....every time...no pussy footing about.

If you paid attention you might've noticed that I am aware of that, which is why i put an option to vote saying that only the price of the test was charged (which i acknowledged can be different).

As I have already said - my car has passed MOT first time. Everything that had to be fixed was done before it was taken there. However it was all fixed because both it needed to get fixed and because it would need to be fixed in order to pass MOT. So the price of that MOT certificate was to me £310 quid by virtue of that being the cost of everything that needed to be fixed and the test itself.

T'was a lucky one this time round (like many I'm paranoid of MOT testers). However I use my works favourite garage who are very practical about their approach to MOT's and will always offer advice and recommendations. The bushes I replaced recently for instance were part recommendation from MOT, part Honda bloke.

Most expensive MOT so far was my first X-Reg Polo which needed a master brake cylinder and associated gubbins, all for almost £300. 8 years ago that wasn't very pleasent to a student as I was at the time!

My gf's F-Reg Celica went in a month ago with no preparation whatsoever (she'd forgotten about the MOT until two days before it was due) and failed on two light bulbs and a loose steering rack at one end. The bill? Just over a ton, and that's despite the infusion of rust around the sunroof. Still at least now when you point it a something it's more than a mere approximation of the direction you're travelling in!!!

so..what I mean is (without you shouting at me ) is this:

IF the MOT was not a legal requirement, would you have had the work done?

    mine needed a numberplate lightbulb.

usually need a service at the time the MOT is due so the mechanic takes it for the MOT first. Last one was the second MOT and just one bulb, first MOT was just the cost of the test although nearly failed on the db reading due to the Powerflow exhaust. Any problems get fixed ASAP, no waiting for MOT time.

Yes. Handbrake needed fixing and while they were at it they found the other stuff. Only thing i wouldn't fix would've been the hazard lights switch, following the logic that if i needed it on i could keep it in place by jamming something there (the issue with it was that it wouldn't stick).

This doesn't mean that I am not annoyed at it all costing me 300+ quid. Oh, and i didn't shout at you , although if you nit pick you are liable to be picked on

P.S. Last year it passed first time without any issues.

( as an aside I agree with this bit 100%...there are things in an MOT that make no sense at all....)

But on the whole it is still a good test. And it is designed to bring peoples attention to safety and car integrity.

Either way, what winds ME up a treat (like I clearly, and accidentaly wount YOU up) is that people DO add all the costs together and blame it on the MOT.

Lets be fair...there is no way that each of those items went wrong just on the cusp of the MOT tester sitting his bum in the car. They didnt happen just cos of the MOT.

Therefore, when the car needed servicing each item would have been brought to your attention. They are running costs. Not MOT costs.

The reason I asked the initial question is this:

a basic MOT costs roughly the same.

Driving and using cars (or even letting them sit still) causes deterioration to one extent or another.

I just dont think the MOT can be to blame. And therefore in my twisted world, the question is: Why do people blame it on the MOT costs when the things would have needed doing anyway.
