i dont see why you'd want a louder exhaust either.. an exhaust on its own really wont do much to a car's performance, if anything.. if it was that easy to make the car go quicker then the manuf would have done it when new.

as for the moped, if its regular get the police involved, they love a bit of chavbashing as much as the rest of us

because they like to charge for it as an upgrade

eg Scoob prodrive pack is mainly an exhaust change ( with fewer cats ) and remapped ECU.

I agree , changing an exhaust on its own doesn't make much difference , but its the gateway to other upgrades.

The only time I changed just an exhaust on a car was on my old Renault 19 16v - an aftermarket SS exhaust was cheaper than the renault part ( and wasn't louder , but it did have a decat pipe and twin DTM tailpipes )

the reason why I asked is that i have similar problems to Skii.

A new guy moved in a few houses down from me (He is renting). He has mates round all the time. One car is a escort mark one (I think) with a really noisy exhaust and the diamter of the muffler must be about 15inches.

The car comes and goes from 7am till 2am. I must hear it about 6 times a day (non work hours). It just means that I cannot open my windows at night now, otherwise the exhaust on the car will wake me up.

Otherwise, where we live was a quiet neighbourhood, now I have to put up up noisy boy racer Cars all the time.

Its just not the escort either, there are other just as noisy cars coming and going, but the escort is the most frequent.

God only know how his next door neigbour with a one year old baby manages.

Just to play devils advocate for a moment, but before going down the police/council route, ever thought of approaching the guy?

Don't go ploughing in with the "thou shalt silence your vehicle or else" line; Instead ask him about the car, whats he's done, blah blah blah. Try and build a bit of a rapport. What you're looking to do is for him to realise his noisy exhaust is a bit too excessive.

Whilst it may take a little longer and require more effort, it'd be the more long term solution, and doesn't bring any ill feeling into the neighbourhood.

Bah! How dare you call yourself a devils advocate... Thats a pathetic effort. It makes far too much sense. Watch and learn.

    [devil's advocate]
Go up to the car and start jamming sound insulation up the exhaust. Or just hit him.
    [/devil's advocate]

    Thats how you do it.

That's not true, manufacturers fit a quiet exhaust so it has muffling on it which slows the flow. Slowing the flow means increasing the pressure meaning the engine cant go as freely meaning less power is output. E.g on my dads mondeo 2.5 V6 the exhaust goes to the back passenger side to a muffling chamber without an outlet then goes across to the right side to another chamber then exits there. It works, can hear a growl in the car but outside its nice an quiet.

On subject i would as has been said go up to the guy and mention it to him, he will be more annoyed if he's contacted by the landlord/council/police before having it mentioned to him by the complainer

Btw. If that guy knows that you are not happy with it. And fails to act. And gets told to sort it by the police, depends on the kind of person that he is he may not take it well, and he will know who reported him. You could say that he was given fair warning, but you never know how he may behave.
