Try www.confused.com and www.insuresupermarket.com before you do anything else. For me, as my car is 'modified' (cone air filter ), only Admiral would quote (same quote from both), but they were £100 cheaper than Elephant wanted to renew, taking me down to about £240 this year. Ah the joys of getting old.

Also, don't pay your insurance in instalments (if that's what you meant by £200 upfront), you're basically taking out a personal loan to pay the insurance and they don't give you a competitive rate- usually 15-20% which is a lot. If you can, find a credit card that gives you 0% for 6 or 9 months on purchases and use that to pay upfront (although obviously you must then be disciplined about paying it off, set up a direct debit ideally). If not, you should still be able to get a personal loan from a bank or whatever at a much lower rate than 15%- less than 10% should be easy to find.

www.moneysavingexpert.com is the place to look for the best credit card and loan deals.

Made mine cheaper from £950 Tesco to £736 @ Elephant.co.uk - all I did was add me mum as a second driver.

I'm insured with Quinn Direct and would say they're pretty inexpensive. Passed my test last feb on my 20th birthday and got an R reg citreon xsara in August. Quinn direct insured it for £700 tpft. Added the parents, gf and another friend for no extra cost. Think it was about £850 fully comp. I think I'll go fully comp next year though as some nob smashed a door window so I had to get it replaced for £120 as it wasn't covered....

Adding my dad on my last years lowered it by 50 quid, and he had a speeding ticket

Adding drivers spreads risk as far as the companies go - they assume that you will be driving the car for a lower proportion of the time. I actually reduce my gf's insurance by being named on her car, but I can't put her on mine

    I thought admiral = elephant

Direct line were almost as good as elephant for me. Don't forget to compare annual equivalent rates though - elephant do a 10 month deal which can give you the impression it's cheaper than it really is.

Fully comp is a good idea unless the car really isn't worth much.

No ones mentioned the RAC. I'm renewing my car insurance and have had some terrible quotes, even confused had quotes ranging between 660-1300 quid. The cheapest quote so far is £498 from churchill (yes the one with the dog going "no no no no"). Directline were also very competitive.

Que me going "No, No, No, NO"

I wouldn't insure anything with Churchill again, even if they were paying me
