At the moment it is true to say that because of the fact people appear to like Medium sized hatchbacks as opposed to family sized ones, you can grab a comparative bargain. Yet I've never seen an argument that really explains why the extra 8" of car is going to kill you.

But then, I've always bought estates. Same car, more room to shove stuff in
Hmm, not so sure tbh. What I was saying, (in a round about way) is that people are more prone to suggesting the cars that they own, based on their experiences which is fair enough, but not conclusive. Others are quick to discount another car based on what information they can google.

The difference with me I suppose is that I have had a few cars in my time so have a different outlook on things. If someone says I want a small car, I dont say "get a Clio 16v", if someone wants a big car, similarly I dont say "get an Octavia". Bunjiweb wants a Mk3 golf, I say go test drive it. If it ticks all of the boxes that he requires, then buy it.

Simlarly, like you have stated, you like estates because they suit your lifestyle. On many an occasion I have required a bigger car to fit the B&Q purchases in, however buying an estate (in my circumstances) would never interest me. Lowe has never owned a car bigger than the Megane coupe he had, yet he would love a Scoob wagon, cos they float his boat.

Cars are a matter of preference is what I was actually trying to say, but people are too quick to discount other peoples choices based on what they read. The rise of this thread states more what I meant.

No Sensei, i'm not kicking the mats to waste time, they have parted and I don't want to injure myself!

Most of the cars I have owned or had use of I'd not recommend, as it happens. They've just been cheap and available at the time. Even now I'd not recommend what I use to everyone because they're now all at least 14 years old and are best suited to the DIY mechanics.

I tend to hop in and out of all sorts of different cars so I can get a direct comparison on them. I also pay attention more to what people complain about on the cars they own or the problems they've had. And spend quite a bit of time swearing at them whilst they're in bits in the garage.

Cars are a matter of preference, but it's getting increasingly rare for it to be an objective preference.

For example, I will one day own a Subaru SVX. Now if I said 'I want an SVX' and fox said 'Get a mondeo' I'd point out the SVX would be a second car and owned purely for the peculiarity of it. I know the tranmission melts, it does 5mpg and parts are impossible to find. I've taken that all into account.

It's just when someone tells me they want to get a golf I like to ask why. The answers normally 'I like them'. Fair enough, but why? Quite a few people base 'I like them' on nothing but a few vauge notions that start 'everyone reckons.........' It's that sort of thing that shoves such a high premium on them.

But I'll not complain too much. I sold a tiered old base model Fiesta and bought a top spec car that was 3 years newer with the proceeds
