I'd do the proper thing and detain them with reasonable force.

As I've repeatedly said, the driver isn't innocent, but the cyclist started it.

I wouldn't do either. Its up to you what substances you put into your body, as long as it doesn't adversely affect anyone else. However, if you were driving a car, lobbed a hamburger bun out of the window and I had short fuse like that woman....

No, the driver started it, clearly...

Teepee obviously lives in a world where reporting things to the police acheives results. I live in London and it doesn't.

Teepee obviously also hates all cyclists, so it wouldn't surprise me if the roles were reversed he'd back the guy in the car anyway. Teepee, you should try going to a country were there are cycle lanes, and rules for cyclists, try riding about, it's a different world. Over here on the road it's dog-eat-dog, esp. for cyclists where bike lanes are just car-parking spaces, and there is no real place for you on the road. Before you comment, I am a car driver first, and a cyclist second (recreation only ATM).

I had a guy throw a live ciggarette but out a window of his car and it hit me, could I then restrain him? Is that then assault?
The guy in the car started it by throwing rubbish out of his window. I find it offensive that people can just throw garbage right in front of me on the road all us tax payers own. Report him to the police? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH.... that's just funny.

We have rules for cyclists in this country, they just ignore them.

We also have rules for the general public, against vandalism. This cylist ignored them. Sure, littering is offensive, but it's not justification for vandalism. Does reporting people for littering work? Ask this guy: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/essex/4741120.stm

Cyclists have this attitude, that it's dog eat dog, and it's up to them to fight for what they want, be that vandalising the car of a guy who litters or knocking down pedestrians who get in their way on the pavement. I do hate cyclists, and I've freely admitted to that, but I wouldn't if they obeyed the rules of our society.

Someone who throws a cigarette out of the car and it hits you accidentally isn't assault unless he throws it at you deliberately. (I've actually had a guy deliberately throw a full McDonalds coke at me when I was passing him on my bike at about 50mph)..

    .
That's the exception, not the rule.

A council employee who was driving behind him notified both authorities.
Obviously knew who to talk to. I've been told by the police they are too busy to deal with a theft!

It's stupid to think that once you get on a cycle you throw out all your ideas about obeying laws in a structured society. From what I've seen it generally comes from a everyones careless attitude in a city where there are few consequences for actions, and once you are 10m down the road you are another unknown peron, irrelevant of mode of transport. I've seen more reckless drivers than cyclists, but obviously all are not idiots. I see about 10 people run red lights every day in cars. I've seen drivers cut up a bunch of 8-year old cyclists with an instructor. What is that teaching them about riding a bike? That all car drivers are assholes? I guess if we all went around making generalisations that would be the case.

We did generalisations of cyclists on another thread a while ago. The cyclist who claimed to obey all the rules later admitted to cycling through a pedestrian are 'but safely', and then a few piled in with the childish and reckless things they like to do to try to piss off car drivers. The generalisation is an entirely fair one.

Oh my god, is that thread never going to die?

The point being probably at least 50% of the people that use the roads break the rules at some point. When was the last time you parked with 2 wheels on the kerb? I dont go round calling you an asshole for driving in a 'pedestrian area' do i? That particular case never actually involves me riding on a pavement, i wait behind the ASL untill the pedestrian crossing goes green, then cross the road, remaining on the road at all times.

AS an example, riding to and from uni today i saw:
at least 20 cars in cycle lanes
people stopped on double yellows (why people think putting their hazard lights on while they go to the shops is ok i have no idea)
(doesnt really go with the heading i saw) Overtaken on approach to a junction by left turning traffic.
Car (passenger) door opened into cycle lane by car stopped in traffic.

2 or 3 cars entering pedestrian crossings on flashing yellows, and at least twice that many setting of from lights on red/yellow rather than waiting for green.

1 car turning right on a forward arrow
1 car doing a u turn at a no uturns sign.

Thats more cars in cycle lanes than i saw cyclists. Now to be honest i think cycle lanes are a joke, and i nearly always use the main carriageway unless the road is particularly fast. But thats beside the point. In this case i agree with you, the cyclist was being a cock, as was whoever it was in the other thread that suggested lifting peoples wipers etc. That doesnt however make all cyclists cocks, no more than those examples of bad driving make all car drivers.

TeePee; it sounds like you need to get out of your car and onto your bike to relieve some of your tension mate. Plus it's a carbon-neutral move.

To be honest, I think littering is an absolutely disgusting habit and should be very heavily penalised. Everytime I travel to the UK it feels dirty and unmaintained. Its so much nicer to be somewhere where people throw their rubbish in bins.
The cyclist was in the wrong for throwing it back in his car, but I see her point entirely. The motorist compounded his filthy littering habit by ABH by pouring a hot liquid etc etc etc.
I wish I was there and could have discussed with him the error of his ways personally...

But to suggest reporting it to the police is a joke. I was burgled once and they just gave me a crime reference number over the phone, then when I had a 12,000 pound motorbike stolen, they couldn't even be bothered taking a statement. If that had been 12,000 pounds stolen from a post office it would have been a different matter. What makes you think they would be interested in a guy throwing litter when they aren't interested in someone breaking and entering and GTA?
