Saw the police out last night with a speed gun. They were in the outskirts of my local town at about 9:15pm. Its a straight road, nobody living there (Its car garages and DIY shops) and a 30 limit. Just seems pathetic that they do that rather than chasing criminals etc. Mum also says she saw them in the same place a week before at 11pm
The last time I saw the Police out with a radar gun they were at the bottom of a small but steep hill, where you really have to brake to stay at 30mph. Cheeky, yes, but of course we should all brake to 30 where necessary.
(This is on my commute route and just along from this, when the houses run out, the road becomes NSL. I would estimate 90% of people drive along it at a measured 40mph - and then continue at 40mph into the next 30 zone...! )

6 points is a bit ridiculous for 40 in a 30 IMO. Your other option is to decline the fixed penalty and ask to go to court. There is a risk that you will end up being fined more, but equally a good lawyer could probably argue that 6 points is excessive and get you down to 4 or 3.Originally Posted by Rack
There's one other big loophole, exposed in Motor Cycle News the other week, which is that if the police are prosecuting you, they MUST furnish you with all the evidence they intend to use against you at least 14 days before the case. If they fail to do so- and lots of forces do- you can get the case thrown out.
It's not a loophole, it's the law. It always will be the law. Both sides must have access to all the evidence used in any court case.Originally Posted by Rave
True- perhaps my terminology is wrong, I meant loophole as in a method of wriggling out of a conviction when you are in fact bang to rights.
In tax we use the term 'avoidance'.
Errrrr..... I think the point is that you should be travelling at 30mph anyway, so you shouldn't need to slow down...Originally Posted by villarule

It's 3 points and £60 AFAIK. I'm waiting for the letter to tell me what it is exactly.
I'm not going to contest, as it was fair enough - I think it's a stupid place and it's not like I was driving unsafely, but at the end of the day I broke the law. If it was 6 points I would contest that the penalty is too much, and hopefully get lesser points, but as it's not 6 I wont bother.
