so, the golf has served us well for almost a year (and almost 30k) but for it's replacement we'd like something more upmarket...
it's down to an A4 TDi or a 320d...
opinions pleeaaaasssseeeeeeeeeeee......
Personally I'd go for the A4 TDI because I like them, although the 320D is probably the better driver's car, and might last longer with less problems

in this price bracket (presuming new) the alfa 159 is meant to be the best low-power (ie, not a 3.5l) diesel by far. failing that, have a look at the lexus too.
the bimmer is probably the better car but.. its a bimmer. i wouldnt touch it with a bargepole.. the 159 is a much sexier car, wont go wrong in year 1 (and, if it does, its under warrantee), and that leather tailored interior makes me shudder

If you get the BMW - make sure you get the optional indicator stick fitted. It doesn't seem to be fitted as standard.
Audi for the class.
When I had a BMW I use to get cut up left right and center. Driving an Audi is a more pleasant experience. Unfortunately BMW seemed to have gained a bad reputation for agressive driving. And I had tons of problems with my BMW (which I had from new) - they had to change the whoel dashboard cause the electronics went barmy after around 2000 miles.
On my 4th Audi now.
that BMW engine is'nt the best DIesel they've ever made.
The VAG, or a 9-3 TiD 150.

We looked at the A4 petrols when replacing mums car, the cars were very nice just the price tag (at the time at least) was rather high - we focussed on the 2.0T I think, don't actually know why we didn't look at the diesels.
I would be tempted to say 9-3 like Zak, or possibly the s4/60?
have you considered a 607, or something from a similar manufacturer (i'd love to see ya buy a aventime).. the build quality is generally pretty much the same, but you get a lot more value for money as the cars drop value far quicker.. the same goes (but to a lesser extent) to volvos, saabs and the like..
x-type has a real good diesel, if i remember right??

Well, I think you all expect me to fall onto the A4.
But I agree with the Saab 9-3, Recently got a drive in a mates and it blew me away, really nice, little understeery (I was pushing rarther hard and it was wet).
Personally, the 2.0TDi is pants compared to the old 1.9, the 3.0 on the other hand

Not sure on the general opinion on larger cars, but the 3 series holds its value a bit too well to be a bargain. For your budget you could easily get a 528/525d with reasonable miles on it
They came out in 2002 with the 2.2tid vauxhall engine with 125bhp, then in 2004 changed for an Alfa/Fiat engine both in 8v (120BHP) and 16V (150BHP). These are highly tunable, some people in Alfa GTs are getting 190BHP out of the 150.
Saw the 2004+ one at auctions going for £9.5-10k
