Re: What to do when boredom ensues? part deux...

So, some of you may have read in the win7 thread that is was going to whack win7 on my toucheee feeleee, but i only had the 64bit version to hand, but then i ended up downloading the 32bit for use on a laptop (long story)

So i had the 32bit available now...

Windows getting ready to install (Oh hi Wallace ):

Windows is now installed, and now does a few adjustments:

adjustments done, time to get to the OS:

Right, so desktop time, where 7 basically tells me that there isn't any disk space

Just to show that it is me doing this

and full screen to show that it is usable to browse the interwibble

    So the result:

The default OS (debian based xandros) had a respectable boot time of 38 seconds for easy mode
and 57 seconds for full desktop (with the tweaks to stop the dual boot problem)
Windows 7 boots in: 41 seconds... not bad..

And once into win7 it's not exactly sluggish, whereas xandros was dog slow in full desktop with it taking a while for it to act on user inputs, windows 7 is instant, which in it's self is very impressive by the guys at Redmond.

Unfortunately, due to disk space limitations of my eee (4GB) i can't really do much with it (including installing drivers ), as windows 7 has installed itself to the size by cutting out lots of features (vlite FTW ), so i have a grand total of 2MB of disk space

Which unfortunately means i can't get the touchscreen working :'(, which was the sole reason for doing this to try out the touch features in 7, but oh well, i just wish i had got a 8GB eee instead

    does it take 2.5"?

maybe get yourself a 30GB SSD?
they're only £75-ish and made my NC10 LOADSSSSSSSSS quicker than with the HD

Nope it's soldered directly to the mobo

the only other option i have is ditching the micropci wireless card, soldering a new usb header up and using the micropci-e as a hdd hook up if i could find the right adaptor, but that's likely to cost some...

You see, that is the other option, but windows flips out during the installation and says that it can't be installed to a USB device (hence why i needed to vlite the installation, otherwise windows flips out and says it needs a minimum of 6GB of disc space...)

Hence why it's not on my exHDD, and i CBA to modify USB drivers to get it working...

i also need a USB stick so that i can flash the BIOS to my modified version

Re: What to do when boredom ensues? part deux...

Can you not install it on the internal memory like you did then move it over the USB to stop the installer flipping out?

Or is that just going to super break it?

Just kept throwing BSODs when i tried it with XP

but still, even as it is ATM, it is mightily impressive for it to be that quick booting, i'm still amazed, even XP was alot slower than that

Dammit, I was just considering selling on my 15" widescreen when I take my old laptop apart, and now you've filled my head with ideas of adding a touchscreen overlay to it and reusing it! Now what am I going to do...

Why dont you take off the old ones and solder / surface mount some new ones . ive done it to my xbox a few times now. I wont say it is easy but it is possible. If you cannot do it your self get some one to do it for you.

Good idea, but sourcing the chips would be a PITA would it not?

Re: What to do when boredom ensues? part deux...

No its not that hard. what you need to do though is find out what chips your taking off and what you need to put in there place. Lucky on the xbox this wasn't difficult im sure with a bit off googleing you'll find what you need.

I would help you out but im being real honest my eye site isnt what it was 1 year ago and i dare to say if i attempted this id need to go buy some glasses.

If you get a digi camera and take some close up shots of the ram i can jump in my jap pages for ram and see what i can come up with. I don't think it would cost a fortune to do either probs about £20 to £30 to go to 16 gb.

Be a nice upgrade and possible no ones tried it yet. Another thing to try is get 4 x 4 gb USB pen drives and replace the chips with them if there the correct type. I think 4gbs are now only £8 to £10.

A quick fone for you. make shure you use a solderign station with a heat blower. that way the chips will come off easily and you'll be able to surface mount easily.
