    xBox 360 on eBay

    Whats to stop me buying a cheap 360 off eBay that someone is selling with 3 red lights, then returning it to MS for repair? Hence giving me a cheap 360?

    Provided the box hasnt been opened and I wouldn't need a receipt to send to MS for repair (it goes off the serial??), is there anything Im missing?

    It just strikes me as stupid that people sell them on eBay when MS offer repair!

    Whats the routine for returning a faulty box? Do they just require the serial? Whose liable for postage etc?

    Re: xBox 360 on eBay

    There might be a problem if the previous owner had already registered the console but then you could just tell them that it was sold to you a few weeks ago.

    you are running the risk of the console being mod-chipped or banned from xbox live - or having another issue as well as the 3red lights

    well 3 red lights + other error should be fixed

    mod-chipped....if it is then it's against ebay rules to sell it so you can get a refund

    banned from XBL.... I wouldnt know about that one (maybe a HDD format etc)

    Nothing much you can do as the unique console serial is banned not the gamertag.

    I'm not sure. All that they asked when I replaced mine was the serial number and my details.

    I would suspect that if they are flogging it on Ebay, then it no longer has a valid warranty, i.e. it's been opened, modded, etc. I'd give it a wide berth, personally.

    It'll depend on the terms of the warranty. Most product warranties stipulate that it isn't transferable. The US version of the Xbox 360 warranty certainly does. The UK one might be different .... but I wouldn't bet on it.

    Bear in mind that a manufacturer warranty is in addition to your statutory rights. But generally, unless they are in themselves in some way illegal, manufacturer warranties only confer what benefit they stipulate, and aren't constrained by consumer law, so if they say it's non-transferable, then it's non-transferable.

    Oh, and the US version also stipulates various situations under which the warranty is invalid :-

    This Limited Warranty shall not apply and Microsoft has no liability under this Limited Warranty if the Xbox Product:

    • is used with products not sold or licensed by Microsoft (including, but not limited to, non-licensed games and game enhancement devices, adaptors and power supply sources) or which are otherwise incompatible;
    • is used for commercial purposes (including rental or lease);
    • is modified or tampered with;
    • is damaged by Acts of God, power surge, misuse, abuse, negligence, accident, wear and tear, mishandling, misapplication, or other causes unrelated to defective materials or workmanship;
    • serial number is defaced, altered or removed;
    • is damaged by programs, data, viruses, or files, or during shipments;
    • is not used in accordance with the printed user instruction materials packaged with the Xbox; or
    • is repaired, modified or altered by other than Microsoft authorized repair centers.

    This Limited Warranty does not cover your data, any separate software or Xbox games whether or not packaged or included with the Xbox Product, or any accessories or peripheral devices that are not manufactured by or for Microsoft.
    That excludes a fair bit, and makes buying a known faulty unit from eBay a rather risky prospect, in my view.

    And, of course, that extension to three years ONLY applies to red-ring failures. Any other fault and the warranty is standard.

    If you can get a unit from eBay that has a RRoD, and IF the warranty is transferrable, and IF there's no other damage or problems, and IF the unit is genuinely as described on eBay, then it MIGHT work as a cheap way to buy. But, if buying a known faulty unit, it then turns out that MS reject the claim for any of the above reasons, good luck in getting a refund from the seller .... and good luck in getting eBay interested, too.

    Personally, if I wanted one, I'd pay the extra and buy a new one. But I suppose the question is .....

    <Clint Eastwood accent>

    Do you feel lucky?
