Re: Cool things to do with a PS3

    I got a PS3 at the weekend.
I have TVersity working, though it often needs a restart. I think it maybe due to it sticking on files in strange formats. I set it up to serve the PS3 specifically so I think some of the standard def stuff (odd Youtube flv) is transcoding fine. I only have an old 4:3 goldfish bowl so no biggie. My Freeview recorded MPGs work just fine, although XBMC does a better job deblocking and filtering.

If PlayTV turns out to be great I will probably upgrade the hard disk.

Is there any advantage to running orb or TVersity over just using WMP to stream things to the PS3? WMP seems to work fine for me and I don't really want to install more than I have to.

Poozle: I think it's that TVersity can reencode on the fly video/music formats that the PS3 wouldn't otherwise use.

Ok, well I'll look into that because it would be useful not having to make sure everything is in the right format.

you know you dont have to download anything if you have windows media player (dont think version matters but ive got 11 ) and if you turn on your ps3 (online) you can veiw all pics music and vids
(mp4) just go into media player and find the bit saying share media then in there your ps3 should pop up and if you allow it to connect then you should be able to view it all.
this is only from memory so just google it, im pretty sure it will be there if you cant do it.
also if you download a program called "super (C) " its free. you can convert any file so like .avi to .mp4
use "bit torrent" to download films if you want.

Re: Cool things to do with a PS3

I have not downloaded anything either you can just put what files you want to view on the PS3 in you shared folfer file and the PS3 automatically Picks up these files.

When both my PC and PS3 is on the PS3 sees my Pc on the network. All you have to do it to let your PC know what you PS3 is allowed to access easy...

But the good thing about orb is if you leave your pc/ps3 on and logged in to orb you can go anywhere in the world log-in and view your hard-drive or whatever drive/folder your sharing.

Theres a specific section towards the bottom of the link for PS3. I also use TVersity, its very easy to get up and running - make sure you have uPnP enabled on your router.

thats pretty good i didnt realise it could do tht

and Paulm@... thats basically the same thing as well

the only down side to it though you have to turn your pc on to do it so if there is a way without turning it on other than actually puting the files on the ps3 then let me know

a bit off topic but is there a way to run orb on an nslu2 Linux device? if i can get that to work properly then my pc doesn't have to be on while streaming videos

    can orb stream mkv files?

Re: Cool things to do with a PS3

Are you using Wireless on your PS3? If so whats the strength? I found some issues streaming Wireless at 60% strength signal (i have old house thick walls) so homeplugs solved all that - could be cause?

What are homeplugs? My wireless signal is weak also cause my walls are thick as well, need help resolving this issue.

I don't think you can install Linux on the PS3 slims and no linux on the phats unless you jailbreak it (sony disabled it after one of the updates ages ago)
