    360 or PS3?

Hey guys, at the end of this month im looking at getting myself a games console and need some advice on which to go for. here are a few points that are causing me trouble

    1) the PS3 is expensive (£435 for starter pack) although if i did get a 360 id get the premium pack and adding an extra controller and a wireless bridge (for my network) would bump the price up to almost PS3 level which leads me onto my next set of questions

    2) Im leaning towards the 360 atm because there are more games available (seem to be more ps3 games id be interested in after xmas) and would be connected to a large (non HD tv so cant imagine taking full advantage of the PS3s games until I got a HD tv)

also I have vista installed and so could stream media which leads me to my next question

    3) Would it be possible to connect the 360 to a PC (which had a wireless adaptor) and then access media files on another PC on that network. (Basically my PC upstairs has all my media on it and is wired to a wireless router, the PC downstairs (where the xbox would be) connects to the internet wirelessly through the aforementioned router. I am looking into this to save about £40 on a wireless bridge

    4) If I did go for either console when would be the best time to buy (I know that the 360 elite is out soon so maybe premium prices will drop and theres rumours of the PS3 starter pack ending)

Know there are a lot of questions there but any help would be great, really am stuck lol.

Can get a bundle for £398 with 5 games and a controller with an indie company in my area, you could buy it & arrange a courier or something and trade in the games you dont want

    Re: 360 or PS3?

There have been a couple of great 360 premium bundles recently, too, but I can't seem to see any today. Toys'R'Us had a great one not too long ago. They still have this pack, which is the £299.99 360 Premium + DVD remote + Transformers: The Game + Transformers DVD boxset of classic episodes. Gamestation have some interesting £279.99 bundles, too.

I almost picked up a PS3 a couple of weeks ago, but decided against it for a few reasons - the lack of games, the shame, my lack of HDTV, HD-DVD beating Blu-Ray in Europe still... it's not yet the PS3's time. Sony expect it to start performing well within ten years, so I'll probably do what everyone else is doing and not buy one for now - maybe in a couple of years. The PS3 still seems more entertaining to read about than anything else.

Is a Wii out of the question? Or even a PS2? You can stream media from your PC to your Wii via Orb, which is pretty cool.

BioShock is on 360, hmm, i'm not biased. Honest!

Though, at the moment I would lean towards the 360 (Though i'm purely a PC gamer myself ). There are rumours of BioShock coming to PS3 in the future, and KillZone2 + UT3 for PS3 look awesome... tough choice but as it is now 360 wins.

    Re: 360 or PS3?

    Thanks for the replies,

I do like the wii but what im looking for is better grahics and i still love the 'standard' type of gameplay. From looking further and peoples opinions here I think i'll go for the 360, hold off a ps3 for a while until more features and games are released. So in terms of bundles and things for a 360 i'd be looking at getting a few games with it, but with all accessories i need to get full experience with the games i've got (ie 2 controllers for local multiplayer, connection to network (via wifi or wired) for streaming of media and playing online) I have seen a bundle at HMV which seems to be the best at the minute 360 premium with forza 2, gears of war and crackdown for £280

That would be enough games and the sort of games im looking for but then i've just got the issue about the network connectivity and possible price drops when the elite comes out.

    Re: 360 or PS3?

there are more must-have games on the 360 than the other current-gen consoles right now. that's the truth of the matter.

the online experience is better on the 360 than the other current-gen consoles right now. that's also the truth of the matter.

if you care, the ps3 is simply a better disc media playback device, i.e. blu-ray has pretty much won the hi-def war. that's partly opinion, but widely held

the ps3 is quieter. truth. of course, the wii is quietest.

the storage mediums in use mean the 360 will begin to suffer in some respects (e.g. multi-disc games) in 6-12 months' time. partly hearsay, supported by some developers' statements.

by and large, multi-platform games are best on the 360. every single comparison video supports this, mainly lighting is the key factor the 360 wins on

both systems REALLY need an hdtv to shine - if you don't have HD, better to spend your cash on a PS2

the ps3 is better for tinkering - it can do things like run ppc linux, if that floats your boat

the media capabilities differ - the 360 can play mpeg1, mpeg2 and wmv videos from a windows pc (media player connect software required), or access all capabilites from a media center pc of some kind. the ps3 can access mpeg1, mpeg2, and avc (mp4) videos from any UPnP server or removable media

the rumourang says the 360 is scheduled for a price cut in europe next week, so wait 7 days to see.

the only current-gen system i don't own is the ps3

PS3 or a console with a 70% failure rate - don't think i need to spell it out

    the 70% figure is fabricated

yes, so far (given is has a significantly shorter field life) the ps3 has shown itself as more reliable, but sony's record with psx and ps2 reliability isn't great, and at least microsoft have a 3 year warranty

if it's something for your list, then yeah, a ps3 is more likely to fail. partly because you don't have any games to play on it

    Re: 360 or PS3?

The pal versions of playstations have in the past used cheaper components so sonys failure rate increases for europe.
They've used a cheaper screen on the psp's, and have had cheaper disc readers in the ps1 & 2 which ment my ps1 was upside down from 12 months on.
Honestly though, although the ps3 has a better chance of surviving, with the 3 year warrenty on 360's and the fact that nearly all the games that come out on the ps3 will also be on the 360 (which still has many of it's own exclusives) there is only one chioce i could make.
    360
I'm also looking foward to IPTV (sat tv stations streamed to your 360) think that will be such a nice feature.

    If you're going to buy a PS3. Don't. Buy a PC.

If you want a console, buy a Xbox360 or a Wii. Yes, I know a 360 is near enough a PC but it doesn't have the stupid price tag.

    Re: 360 or PS3?

Since almost everyone here is slagging off the PS3, I say you should still buy a PS3. Why you ask? Because it looks so much better externally then the Xbox 360.

lol thats one way to decide which one,

I think looking at it what i may do is wait till the month after and get a 360, that way the price will have dropped (hopefully) with more people going for the elite. This way I can spend the money this month on a HD tv preparing for its arrival to get the best benefit of it with my next pay cheque (everything revolves around payday lol).

Thanks for the advice everyone, much appreciated.

Wow that's the best reason I've heard so far

PS3 is starting to get some good games now, there's a few on the horizon. To get the most out of both systems you will need an HDTV really, yeah you can play the games in standard deff, but it's so much better in high definition. You can connect a 360 up to a monitor for HD gaming using a VGA cable you can buy in most game stores, not sure about the PS3 though. Got my 360 running through a 19" monitor and it looks great.

And to answer your question, yes you can connect your 360 through your PC that is connected to the network wirelessly, but you can only share internet connection, only files on the wireless computer will be shareable AFAIK, it's not a feature I use a lot anyway really.

I'd say go for the 360 personally, there's far more great games on there, and xbox live is leaps and bounds above Sony's equivalent, yes you have to pay for it, but it's worth it IMO. It might be worth waiting until closer to Christmas for more deals to pop up though.

    Re: 360 or PS3?

I've got both and I barely ever play the PS3 not overly impressed with any of the games on it at the moment.

    XBOX 360 Premium + 2 Wireless Controllers + Forza 2 + Gears of War + Crackdown = £300

Best deal at the moment in my opinion. Put it this way, if I had to sell one of them it would be the PS3.
