Hi. There are plenty of threads on HDD replacement already. Have a read and check out the links to various guides.

Just make sure the HDD you buy is a SATA 2.5" (laptop) HDD. Preferably 5400rpm, the same as the stock HDD.
Just pick any 2.5" 5400rpm (or 7200rpm if you feel the need) from this list at scan:

I've just ordered that one. It should arrive tomorrow, so I could let you know if it's OK if you want. I want see why it won't be though .
EDIT - Randomly, it got delivered about half an hour ago. Yes - you heard me. About 9pm, knock at the door, and it got delivered by city link. Pretty impressive if you ask me. From order to (free) delivery in under 48 hours - well done scan and city link .
You need a 2.5" laptop drive
EDIT: Just noticed you've already ordered one... How did it go? Was it easy to install the new drive?
Thanks
OK, first impressions says that the new hard drive is a little louder than the one that came in the PS3, but that might just be because all I've done so far is restore my backup which is probably quite stressful on a new disk.
Installation was easy. The hardest part was getting all the screws back into the machine because they're so small. For more info, check here:

I haven't played any games or anything on it yet, so I'll see what it's really like tomorrow.
FYI, it took about 1 hour to backup my 38GB of data on the original drive to a USB drive (has to be FAT32), and I've left it restoring that data back on my new drive now (it said it'd take 52 mins).
Eww Hitachi (personal grudge against them). Most people tend to use Western Digital or Seagate for their replacement hard drives in PS3's. You will be wanting a 250GB soon me thinks!
Has anyone used the backup utility before?
I just had a better look through at what's been backed up, and it seems it's missed all my games. My saved games are all there, just not the installed games. Is that because they're copyrighted, and not allowed to be backed up, or did something go wrong so I should try again?
It's just annoying that I might have to redownload/install everything I had...
thanks for the info, will let you know how i get on.
Word of warning, check that the HDD you are buying is 9.5mm high or less, picking *any* 2.5" sata drive isn't the best advice..
The bigger drives such as the 400 and 500 (and a couple of the 320GB's) are 12.5mm high and simply won't fit in the caddy, let alone the slot...

8001051F and 80010514 have come up so many times on my ps3 i'm considering using it as a target for paintball, not to mention i've just gone and bought H.A.W.X and now i've got to go and buy another ps3 (£300) because my warranty ran out two months ago - xbox 360 is starting to come to mind
Hi Mr Flibbles,
Have you bought anything from the Damaged Box company? They've got some 80gb PS3s which is tempting.
I'm keen to get a PS3 but don't think I can hang on until the 'proposed' Sony price cuts
No I haven't but as far as I'm aware they are the same company as choicesuk which is where got my box damaged ps3 from.
