    Media Server?

    Hi, quick question....

    What is the media server thing for in the XMB in the videos, pictures and music tabs? Also is there a way that I could say have the PS3 stream media for my pc? I have a WiFi Access Point feature on my mobo...

    It's not something i'm dying to do but would be a cool little value add if I could...

    thanks

    Re: Media Server?

    the PS3 is a UPnP client - all the media it can access via the XMB needs to come from a UPnP server like MythTV

    and no, the PS3 itself is not a UPnP server - only a UPnP client

    Re: Media Server?

    So say I had this MythTV program on my PC I could then set up the PS3 to stream media from it.

    For example PS3 downstairs, PC up stairs, I watch stuff off my PC HDD on the PS3 and Big TV downstairs...

    Thanks for your reply BTW

    Re: Media Server?

    As above, you could stream from the PC to the PS3, but not vice versa.

    Re: Media Server?

    You can even use windows media player to share media across the network, which may be handy if you already have the library setup there. I've found that codec support for video is fairly limited on the PS3, but generally music and photos work well.

    Here is a guide:

    Just discovered this.
    Can't post url as less than 5 posts (google it's the one top of page1)

    PS3 Media Server

    PS3 Media Server is a DLNA compliant Upnp Media Server for the PS3, written in Java, with the purpose of streaming or transcoding any kind of media files, with minimum configuration. It's backed up with the powerful Mplayer/FFmpeg packages.
    Current features

    * Ready to launch and play. No codec packs to install. No folder configuration and pre-parsing or this kind of annoying thing. All your folders are directly browsed by the PS3, there's an automatic refresh also.
    * Real-time video transcoding via MEncoder
    * DVD ISOs images / VIDEO_TS Folder transcoder
    * OGG/FLAC/MPC/APE audio transcoding
    * Thumbnail generation for Videos
    * You can choose with a virtual folder system your audio/subtitle language on the PS3!
    * All formats PS3 natively supports: MP3/WMA, JPG/PNG/GIF/TIFF, and all kind of videos (AVI, MP4, TS, M2TS, MPEG) the ps3 is willing to play
    * Display camera RAWs thumbnails (Canon / Nikon, etc.)
    * ZIP/RAR files as browsable folders for pictures/audio files
    * Support for pictures based feeds, such as Flickr and Picasaweb
    * Internet TV / Web Radio support with VLC, MEncoder or MPlayer
    * Podcasts audio/ Video feeds support
    * Basic Xbox360 support

    Windows/Linux Only:

    * Direct streaming of DTS / DTS-HD core to the receiver
    * Remux PS3 compatible H264/MPEG2 video and all audio tracks to AC3/DTS/LPCM in real time with tsMuxer
    * FLAC 96kHz/24bits/5.1 support

    Agreed, I wouldn't say rubbish, just how much it pails by comparison. Also I can reccomend PS3MS to my OS X and Ubuntu friends.

    Re: Media Server?

    PS3 Media Server is very good, I've never had any problems with it.

    I did try to use Widows media player or Nero before, but both of them gave me headaches.

    Re: Media Server?

    I set up window media player 11 no problem on my PS3 when I had my old rig with XP installed, but I have tried a few programs now with my Vista rig and cannot get any to work!
