Re: PS3 - worth it or not?

It's far from perfect. However I have one machine that is my media extender, games machine, Blu-Ray player and I can check my email from my front room.

Since buying it earlier this year I have played: LOADS of Burnout Paradise, Enchanted Arms, Uncharted (awesome), Ratchett and Clank (also awesome, bought the PSN mini-game). I have also bought Wipeout HD (enjoying Burnout too much to play it) and Loco Rocco thing-a-ma-jig.

The original Transformers film on Blu Ray, looks sharp and vibrant.

I plan on getting a 360 next year when they don't keep breaking (all of my 360s friends have had their's fail). I am a closet environmentalist, so buy something I know will have to be replaced multiple times doesn't sit well with me.

    Bit harsh mate?
Loads of people on here have HTPC's, including myself. Heck, you can build a basic one for not much than a PS3 costs.

Well we have a 360, PS3 and a Wii and the 360 doesnt get used anymore, more for the sake of paying for the XBL subscription to make it worth while.

Loved the PS3 from day one, also stream to it via my pc without any problems and Blu-ray has been great so far.

Much the same here. The missus wii and our old noisy 360 are out in the spare room now gathering dust. The wii does get some use when her mates are over etc though

In regard to the PS3, no matter if its gaming, watching a blu-ray/upscaled dvds, streaming film/music/pic libraries from pc, browsing the internet we find the PS3 to be the complete package. Is great having one tidy unit sitting under the main TV in the living room to do all of the above while relaxing/chilling out on the sofa. We just got one of those logitech dinovo mini keyboards now as well to control it all on, really recommend it for the PS3 (or if you use a windows media type set up)

I don't use my PS3 either, its a great DVD/Blu-ray player though. If i didn't have an xbox it would be used all the time, sadly with the 360 as competition it sits gathering dust.

Same as, haven't played on my Xbox 360 for months now, use my PS3 daily, mainly as a Bluray player & media centre for streaming video stuff from the server. If it would only play H.264 files natively, then it really would be the complete package.

I agree, that is a bit annoying but luckily there is mkv2vob.

Both systems will play h.264 codec content.

They won't, however, allow you to use any old container.

MKV2VOB doesn't transcode, just remuxes. You should try it, been using it a while now and it's great.

AFAIK it has the option to do so in the configuration menu. To give you a rough idea it takes about 5 to 10 minutes convert a 2gb h.264 file.

I used to use mkv2vob but I found it to be a pain in the proverbial. I now use PS3 Media Server which doesn't need them to be transcoded to play them.
