    Re: Achievments in PC Games

I play Day of Defeat (DOD) allot on the PC and the achievement's always produce a "grats/nice one" from other players in game (especially the more difficult ones to get) i do not think they subtract from the game at all, although personally i never really set out to get them (especially as some need crazy amounts of game time i can not commit) so more of a surprise if achieved than a long grind for them.

Like I say though only do it on games where one platform doesn't have a advantage over a other, driving games are a perfect example, sports games would work as well.

    Re: Achievments in PC Games

The mechanic itself is a good one, but it needs to be incorporated right into the game or it adds nothing.

I don't want an achievement for finishing the tutorial, or the first level, or the second...

They need they to add something to the game, reward skill, not grinding. If they don't provide a fun challenge or at least some entertainment, then it's nothing but a pat on the head from a glorified calculator for doing something you were going to do anyway because you already paid 40 quid for the privilege.

    Re: Achievments in PC Games

I like them when it's not intrusive (ie: Steam based ones), but I dislike having to run G4W to get them.

Sometimes I have achievement OCD, but mostly I'm too impatient and move onto the next game!

    Re: Achievments in PC Games

Doesn't interest me tbh - smacks of willy wagging for gamers Still whatever shakes your tree n'all that but their inclusion isn't significant enough to annoy me. I suppose it's a logical extension of high scores from the days of yore. TBH I'm lucky to get the time to play games to their conclusion, let alone spend ages trying to get every merit badge on offer. They certainly don't inspire me to reply things - that'd be just a good game in the first place - although I quite enjoy replaying things occasionally with hacks in place to see what all the upgrades etc are like.

    Re: Achievments in PC Games

I initially was hooked on the concept of achievements but its slowly becoming less important to me, although lately im begining to feel an urge to get a platinum trophy on a PS3 game. Dont know why just coz it would look uber kool on my gamecard, as iv never seen anyone with one ;-P

    Re: Achievments in PC Games

I think it depends - as stated before, I like achievements to be meaningful, and whats more important to me is that certain achievements will make me replay a game in a manner which I may not have done, even if I wanted to replay the game anyway. For example, there are games which have a good/evil slant for your character, and I always tend to be good (because I'm nice )

However, when I tried to get some of the evil achievements it made me have to choose certain paths, which meant I was exposed to missions/people/weapons that I wouldnt have been.... The achievement itself isnt that important tbh, but just a mechanism to guide you.

Which is basically a long way of saying what someone else has already said

    Re: Achievments in PC Games

I like achievements but I agree to people that have said that it depends on the implementation. I hate the ones which give you achievement for natural game progress (completing a level, etc). These achievements should be achievements which means that you went out of your way to achieve them. like in on of the HL2 episodes where you had to carry the gnome form the beginning of the game to the end in order to send him in space.

    Re: Achievments in PC Games

I've never seen the point of them. A lot of them you just get for doing something boring and repetitive. I don't want to complete menial tasks for no other reason than to tick them off a list.

Right, at home now so I can check. The way I do it is:

    *Scroll down to game*
    View stats

disagree but to each to their own. The storyline and gameplay is what brings me back to a game not achievements.

i honestly dont care about achievements. i play games for fun and at my own pace and level. Any achievements i get along the way are purely accident
