Lamely contrived and pointless un-fun - just an attempt to cater to obsessive streaks in the same way as TFC hats, world of warcrap etc.

What about difficulty levels then? If you've completed a game on normal, would you go back and complete it on hard?

I can only remember ever doing that on C&C Generals ZH and Call of Duty (because CoD is so much more fun on the hardest setting), but I wanted initially to play through the story without dying every 10 seconds at a certain point.

I think achievements can, in a way, make up for that - you can play each level normally and get through the story, and then go back to levels you enjoyed and try to succeed within a shorter timeframe, or with only one type of attack/unit.

Fair enough, I guess that partly explains your attitide towards achievements - they don't really suit "one-shot" players.

As you said, different things work for different people - at the end of the day I can't imagine that achievements are that hard to implement - you could code most of them with an Excel IF statement - so I suppose there's little reason to leave them out.

yea very easy to code hehe. i dont like the achievements on levelling up on FIFA 10's virtual pro mode because for example, if you want tour shooting accuracy sta to increase you got to score like maybe 10 one on one goals for it to increase a bit

I prefer how MMO games do it. the more you shoot or use a particular skill, the more in levels up!

At least it's different though - I quite like that... if it was just "take 2,000 shots to increase shot skill to max", it would be much more boring than saying 5 goals from 30+ yards for a bit, 5 chips over the keeper for a bit, so on so forth.

The only major issue I have with FIFA is that it doesn't seperate attackers and defenders - so despite the fact that my pro is a centre-forward, he's still lacking achievements for "blocking a shot on goal" and "making a goal-line clearance". It's fairly obvious that your main centre-forward is never going to be standing on the goal-line during a match, so there's no way of succeeding.

I'm going to convert him into a defender after I've finished his frankly ridiculous and unrealistic career as a centre-forward, train up his defending stats and then put him back as a forward.

    Re: Achievments in PC Games

Thats anotehr thing. these achievemnts are imo useless for when your playing competively online.

fifa 10's pro mode is a fine example of this as you cannot simply aim to try and score 5 goals in a one on one situation when your playing amoungst other real human players in 10v10.

Same goes for even mw2. You can try and aim to make 20 kills with a pistol online on a competitive team play match.

Achievements are ok for single player/offline mode as you can just try and score just 1 on 1's offline or keep using a pistol in offline mode to try and get the achievement but on the real world, it wont work.

Grief, I just remembered the BF2 ones... 40 kills in a round with explosives or something ridiculous like that, it was murder to obtain. You had to run round like an arsewipe with hundreds of claymores trying to get as many kills as possible in the vague hope that you'd reach the magic number before the round ended. I got banned from at least 2 servers while trying to obtain that one.
