this is soooooo annoying.
only bought this game for the coop.
i gave up rather quickly because it seemed like you had to open soooo many ports and my bellend housemate who owns the place probs wudnt be too happy.
If anyone has some definitive solutions id be glad to hear them.
Im back at hoe for the next week or so and i have control of the routing/wireless here so if i manage to get a solution il let u guys know.
Might be worth asking over at the GameOn forums as well. I haven't tried co-op yet, so don't have any other advice to offer you.
we tried scanning the internet quite a lot and all we could find was we needed to open some ports in the router, but that didn't work. tried entering a DMZ for 2 minutes, that also didn't work.
£20 for a game that doesn't even work
it just makes you wanna fall out of a window.
you can get a tool called gameranger irrc thats kinda like xfire and somehow that lets it work untested by me since i got mine to work just by opening ports
also are you all on steam i have a mate who bought retail and he needs to patch it (with latest patch) to join my games
yeah, we both bought it on Steam last night and it's useless so far. just some stupid little robot that's extremely annoying.
i might try that GameRanger program you mentioned later when Lee's back on.
it worked on LAN ok, the Saffers were playing it most of the last LAN weekend.
There's loads about people having issues getting it working, I was doing a lot of reading up about it.
End resault I've stuck with single player so far as I cannot yet face the hassle of getting it working.
One thing you'll not only need to open ports on your router/modem but also need to gvie yourself a static IP address on the router otherwise everytime you reboot your pc the ports will no longer be unblocked.
gameranger is sugested as a simple way of getting it to work.
Oh and AFAIK you need a gamespy account for borderlands, steam only does nothing.
There's lots of complaints over the pc version networking.
There seems to be lots of little tricks to get it working but no two work for everyone.

People seem to be having mixed results with this. I've had this game for a few weeks now, and loved playing it both single player and co-op, without many problems. The main issue is around port forwarding.
I followed the instructions for forwarding various ports, as provided in the readme, with the game, but that didn't work. I found that port 28902 (TCP) had to be forwarded, but others have found this not to be the case apparently - it won't work if I don't forward that port for me. Alternatively you could just forward the range from 28900 to 28910. Have a look at this Steam forum posting, it might help.
Another approach is to use the uPNP capability of your router (assuming it supports it, most do these days), and write a VB script to forward the ports for you - no nasty fiddling with the router itself. This Steam forum posting shows how to do that (I've tried it, it works well, and means you can easily close the ports when you're done playing).
While I'm at it, this post is a useful read - covers lots of configuration goodies (POV, key bindings etc).
I hope this is useful, and you get the game working, as I think it is rather good.
EDIT: as Pob255 points out, you must have a GameSpy account, but that is straight forward to set up. As for a static IP address, you could always bind an IP address to the MAC address of your PC on the router, so that even if you are using DHCP, you'll always get the same IP address.

I followed ther intructions on here and it worked ok

GameRanger works. but that shouldn't be the answer, we still need a fix from Gearbox.
but yeah, Gameranger ftw until the patch.
If you aren't hosting a game then you don't need to open any ports. The trick is to join online games with 1 or 2 slots open not 3. Joining games with 3 slots open never works for me.
