Problem is that many companies ir data/signal patterns is under license so you need to make deals/get licenses before you can use it, the home entertainment industry is even less keen on sharing stuff than the pc industry.
So I can see compatibility becoming a major bone of contention to get the system fully working.
I completely agree - that and getting content providers to play ball. Sky would never give me a PCI-e card for my media center for example - they prefer the control of their own set-top box. As for HDMI-CEC the very fact that diff. manus. 'rebrand' the damn thing says it all - it's just confusing for the end users and designed to lure people into believing they're locked in to a particular manufacturer. I had no idea "AnyNet" was CEC. Grrr.

Ah, ok but the original speculation after the PS4 event was that PS4 had 7970M aka some variant of Pitcairn. I guess it depends how modular GCN is but 256-bit bus is not Cape Verde either. So Xbox One is 768 shaders and PS4 is 1152 shaders (both with 256-bit memory bus) while various GCN parts are:
    7770 640 shaders (128-bit bus)
    7790 896 shaders (128-bit bus)
    7850 1024 shaders (256-bit bus)
    7870 1280 shaders (256-bit bus)
    7970M 1280 shaders (256-bit bus)
So it's somewhat hard to tell. PS4 is certainly faster and the embedded RAM vs GDDR5 is another unknown. Maybe the Xbox will have better latencies and power consumption. (GDDR5 needs a fair bit of juice: 3GB in a 7950 uses about 35W more running at 1500MHz than at 310MHz).

Only if they are stock chips, we know the ps4 one is a customised version, I've seen nothing to say that the xbox one is a stock jaguar apu

    Here's some more fun
xbox live tv only in the US at launch
    http://uk.ign.com/articles/2013/05/2...e-us-at-launch
And requires hdmi input, so if you've got a smart tv or you use freeview built into a tv then it's unlikely to have hdmi output so it'll not work.

So there big tv thing isn't going to work in the UK at first, you need to install all your games onto a 500gb hard driver to play them, they are directly linked to your account so no 2nd hand or lending games without paying an extra fee.
This really is looking like nothing more than a sub par gaming pc with a kinect attached to it.

It funny when you think back to the launchof the ps3 and 360, sony tried to push the ps3 as media centre that played games, while ms pushed the 360 as being game centric and now we've got the reverse going on.

At this point in time I would say I'm leaning towards the PS4.

The Xbox One looks like it will offer a lot more in terms on entertainment but in terms of gaming it looks like they've made a bit of a compromise. Either way, I will be waiting to hear much more about each console before deciding how I will (gladly) waste the next 10 years of my life

You're thinking in terms of discrete parts, you should be thinking more in terms of APUs - both PS4 and XBox One chips are very similar AMD designs of CPU that have the GPU as part of the chip.

they are similar in the way the intel igp and amd igp are similar..... the xbox has ondie cache with 2133 DDR3 , whereas the PS4 uses GDDR5 with no cache (or not the same or size)

different calls will be needed and whislt both X86 , will need dedicated coding to optimize them.

They're a lot more similar than that! They're both based on the same AMD jaguar architecture, with some relatively minor specialisms for each.

not really - you cant just go round adding on die cache and call it similar......

Yeah you can, it's not a major change and if it's acting as a cache then you don't even need to think about it, just set a flag for it to be used probably and forget about it. The two set ups will probably take very similar code, then you 'just' tweak performance levels based on the results - maybe allow higher shadow resolution for the PS4, or higher AA for the XBox One until you hit the target performance levels.

Re: New Xbox announced - Xbox One - So what did you think?

I liked the reveal, at least it gave us more information than the Sony controller reveal it... couple of things I noted:

Xbox TV stuff - US only, I knew this the second they showed it as many companies have done something similar and they have always failed to make it across the pond.

Look/Design - I like it. It fits with the AV equipment and looks more professional than toy like Each to their own tho.

Controller - Good job they didn't touch it much, just looks like improvements.

Dual kernels, quick switching apps and snapping is all very nice and sleek. As I'm mostly a PC gamer I'm not really in it for the games (just social gaming with mates round and the few exclusives) so having a entertainment device with some cool features is what I'm after.

My opinion on the flame war topics:

KINECT IS WATCHING ME!!! - Oh come on! 95% of the people who are moaning about this are the same people who have their entire life on FB and post every movement of their day on twitter. I can imagine they are the same people who bring their laptop in the office to get fixed and they have a sticker over the webcam.

Preowned / Borrowing Games - I just don't care. Physical media is on the way out, I've been using steam for 9 years so maybe I'm just used to it? They have to control their media somehow as you don't need the disc to play the game and this makes sense. Their wording isn't perfect and people can take it as they want. To me it sounds like to link the game to a second account costs money (allowing BOTH parties to play the game) however they don't say what will happen to unlink from one account to link to another.

Backward compatibility - Part of me is going "aww thats a shame" but on the flip side I remember when the 360 came out and I was happy I could play (some of) my xbox one, I mean original, games but when it came down to it I don't think I ever actually put one of those discs into the 360 at any point in its life time... I've had xx years to play them, give me new shiny stuff!

Periodical online access - Again doesn't really bother me but I think its stupid. Personally is neither here or there for my lifestyle (I'm never far from internet) but there are a lot of people this effects.

All in all I will be picking one up but maybe not on release and it won't replace my shiny gaming machine as a primary gaming device or even the living room device (TV + Steam Big Picture FTW).

Re: New Xbox announced - Xbox One - So what did you think?

I want to pick up on some of these points:

Periodical online access, I agree, esp when you consider some of the current biggest selling games are ones with online multiplayer.
Caveat there is that MS was also plugging cloud services there including save games and profiles, granted that's probably going to be more developer dependent.

Backward compatibility, anyone who's surprised by this is a bit silly, they are a major change in cpu type and programming language (powerPC to x86) they where never going to be backwards compatible.
How much of a problem will this be? will depend on release & early titles, not having a major title at release or a load of titles early on has a major impact on the sales.

KINECT IS WATCHING ME!!! & Preowned / Borrowing Games, I've included together because they are connected.
Kinect is being used with user accounts, which is both good and bad, good because it's a seamless (or should be) system, no need to log in just move in front of it, it will read your face and log in your account.
Problems will be, How good it is? What backup systems are in place? and Who else has access to it?
e.g. you're involved in some accident, get hit on the side of your head and now your face has swollen up or you're in bandages, will the xbox still be able to recognise you or will you be locked out until your face is back to normal?
Next is the worrying talk from the past where it was suggested that it could be used to age lock films and games, good thing? you don't want 8year old billy to watch that scary 18 rated film, but you have friends round to play a game together or watch a movie but because one of them doesn't have an xbox account and the game/movie is rated 12 it will not let you play it while he's in the room because it can detect him but cannot verify his age.
Also from that stuff it was mentioned that it can track up to 6 people at once, but what about 7? will it lock stuff out because it cannot cope with 7 people at once?
Preowned/Borrowing might not effect you but it does effect others esp younger people who don't have access to as much spending money, the preowned market is very large, not just because people buy cheap games but many people trade in relatively new games to be able to buy newer games. (this is a bigger issue for the UK market as console games are more expensive here compared to pc games than in the US where the pricing is far closer)

We don't know enough about how this 2nd hand fee will work.
I do have my doubts if whole games will be installed, I was wondering if it was more likely to be parts of the games are installed, so as to stop a small fee, to stop lending+small fee payment
That or the whole game is installed and the individual game disk is bound to your account, so to lend it you'd have to unbind it, lend it to him, he pays a small fee to rebind a game that has been bound, then if you want it back he has to unbind it and you have to pay a fee to rebind it.
That or they decide that a game disk is freely transferable and the fee is pretty much the same (90% or more) of the retail price of the game, which basically kills any lending/resale dead.

Remember that games will be bound to your own personal account which is logged in via face recognition, so think about this situation, little timmy and his brother Bob, get bought an xbox one to share for xmass, now Timmy uses his xmass money to buy super fantasy rgp SIX and Bob uses his money to buy vrooom car racing 2, now Bob cannot play super fantasy rgp SIX is Timmy is not in the room and Timmy cannot play vrooom car racing 2 if Bob is not in the room.

One last thing I'd like to mention about Kinect2, every thing shown only shows the motion tracking when a person is standing, every time someone is sitting it's only ever doing face recognition and voice commands, leads me to think that yet again Kinect motion control cannot cope with sitting people yet to see anything about very small/child sized people (something current kinect currently has major issues with)
