My new Samsung flatscreen has an optical out on the back for surround sound. What surround sound kit could I use to get the best out of it? I don't want to spend a packet, ebay or 2nd hand is fine!

how are you getting the sound to the flatscreen - what sound card do you have and how do you connect it? Why would you have to thru flatscreen, when you can connect speakers to the source directly...What's your budget anyway?
It depends what the source is and if we're talking about TV or monitor. I have the LE32R74 and connect the optical out to my AV amp. Normally I'll be using the audio output from my Skybox, PC or DVD but on the rare occasion I'm actually using the TV tuner it means I've got decent sound, instead of being stuck with the onboard speakers (which aren't great).
sorry I should have been more specific, its a flatscreen TV, and it has an optical out that I would like to connect to a surround system. I believe that this will output any sound plugged into the scart?

It depends on what you are trying to acheive.
If what you want is one single output for all your sources (that are plugged into the tv) then this will do what you want if you output to an appropriatley inputted amp/receiver. HOWEVER unless the Tv has a built in DTV decoder and the channel is outputting a 5.1 format I don't really see a benefit in buying more kit to deal with it. Sorry I don't know the specific kit spec .
Assuming I understood your question correctly, I personally was thinking about the Samsung HT-TX35R. Don't know how much is too much though.
the samsung 74 series do indeed translate sound put in via any input (except HDMI) back out the optical port.
This means your poor quality sound in the scart will get send too the TV as analouge, digitalised, then back too analouge again in any "reciver" that you plug the optical out too.
As such its better to only use the optical out when using the Tuner in the TV.
throw new ArgumentException (String, String, Exception)
any one have any links to anything they would reccomend for my scenario then? I saw a Logic 3 soundstation which looked like it might do the job.
Its only a small lounge so doesnt need a whacking great sound system/amp/dolby decoder etc.
