using empire direct for a big telly

has anyone used e-d for a big telly or similar goods? i'm buying my 36" tosh at the end of the month, and e-d are a fair whack cheaper than elsewhere, but delivery is £50 and they will take 7-10 days - this seems like a bit of a ripoff imo - granted they need 2 blokes and a van - but given the size of them i struggle to believe they cant arrange something sooner/cheaper - curries is £20 for delivery within 3 days!

any thoughts? or any better prices on a toshiba 36ZP48P - needs to be the version with surround sound - e-d come to £840 all in..

I got my 32" Lowew from them. The BOX is came in was MAMMOTH....really mammoth.

It took a tail lift and 2 dudes.

The TOTAL INCLUSIVE PRICE is what you need to look at...not just the delivery charge.

Anything over 32" needs 2 blokes for their own personal staff's health and legal compliance with varying staff laws.

ie dont get a 4 foot midget to deliver a 5 foot high box that weighs more than his whole family

7-10 days is reasonable, they may have to give the delivery company 5 working days notice for large deliveries (I know we have to at work)

currys can prob deliver quicker as they will stock it at their local warehouse (god knows where empires warehouse is) and use a local courier to deliver it.

I think thats quite reasonable. Its cheaper possibly because they don't hold stock if you don't like the wait, pay more money from a place that has them in stock. Maybe its cheaper as they don't have enough staff to turn orders around as quick as other companies, therefore keeping costs down and prices low. You don't have to get it from ED, and if you do, you have to accept their terms.
    It is Inevitable.....

well this is the thing - if i picked it up (bolton) i could have it within 2 days of my order (so they must have it in stock) but i dont have a car at the mo so i cant do that (besides, petrol would be near the delivery cost). i'm not that peeved at the £50, more at the amount of time its going to take - i would have thought that ed would be large enough that they are sending out 2man teams every day of the week (no exageration) so i would think they could deliver quicker..

the annoying thing is that they are not willing for me to put down a deposit today (i could whack down £200) and arrange delivery, so that when the end of the month rolls around i can just buy the tv and the delivery men will be waiting to pick it up.. i'd even be willing to put down a non-refundable deposit of the £50 delivery charge (so ED aren't missing out) but no.. non-flexibility of companies *really* annoys me - its what customer service is all about..

i feel for ya and your leowe zak.. they ahve a 40" crt on ed at the mo.. £2k thou

I love my Loewe.....I'm very pleased to own it It was more dough, with less features than the Tosh, but it has a certain "Mercedes" feeling to it

Dixons wanted to charge me £60 to deliver and install my LCD TV. but they said.... "if you came last week, delivery would have been free".... which sort of knocked me down a bit.

I told them £60 was enough to put me off buying the TV from them.... and I wanted the TV wall mounted. he told me it would be a further £300 to wall mount the LCD.

I laughed and said i'd do it myself

In the end i was charged £15 to deliver my TV.... whats hard about installing a wallbracket with a few rawl plugs and plugging in a few cables.... Worth £360.. hell no.

My TV is due for delivery this afternoon... Cant wait to get home to try it

how heavy is an lcd of that size? i ask because next months pay might well be spent on a nice tft to ceiling mount above my bed - but not actually into the ceiling (its not my place) so i'll have to build some sorta holder above my bed..
