    Re: AMD - Piledriver chitchat

Don't forget Carrizo is supposed to be a SoC/dual-chip hybrid, what we're seeing here is the mobile SoC configuration. The SiP version of Haswell also has fairly restrictive IO, presumably to help with power consumption: http://ark.intel.com/products/81021

After all, there aren't many 'thin' laptops you can add extra hard drives or PCIe cards to, so the limitations generally won't be a problem. Note this low power Haswell also has less cache per core than the regular chips.

First test of a Kaveri laptop:

    https://translate.google.com/transla...tml&edit-text=

Its an Acer with an A10 7300. It costs around 500 Euro or around £400.

It seems the 12.5" HP Elitebook is now available in the US:

    http://h71016.www7.hp.com/MiddleFram...D=19701&SBLID=

    Edit!!

    Some models released in Germany:

    http://skinflint.co.uk/?fs=a10-7300&in=

The Acer listed has an R7 265M graphics card too!

So that means for £400(similar VAT rate in Germany),you can get an A10 7300 laptop with a R7 265M in Crossfire.

    "Operating System: FreeDOS"

So factor in the cost of a copy of Windows as well (although that costs less for a big OEM of course) and we're likely to see them in the £450 - £500 region. Still a decent price for the spec, of course....

    Oops!

BTW,I got the information from a post over on Anandtech - I do like how they are pushing the Core i5 4200U over there as being better, since everyone OFC renders and runs 4K video encodes on a sub £500 laptop!

Short item on AMD stacked RAM: http://www.fudzilla.com/home/item/35...cked-dram-apus

That image, does it look like two stacked APU die to you? Not read the linked pdf, maybe later.

Interesting, but that looks very much like a Trinity/Richland die to me. It could be just for illustrative purposes I guess, it is quite a pretty one...

    Re: AMD - Piledriver chitchat

Possibly, but they already did a dramatic countdown for a chip which was already released.

    Edit: Update: http://wccftech.com/amd-12-core-aseries-apu-inbound/

But I've not checked the sources yet, so keep that pinch of salt to hand...

A 12 core server-aimed FX chip seems plausible. 12 core APU not so much IMO - that would be one epic huge die unless the graphics part was very small.

I've also just considered the possibility of 'cores' referring to GCN compute units, but that would mean 768 shaders; the largest GPU available on Kaveri is 512.

    Re: AMD - Piledriver chitchat

Kaveri has, according to AMD, 12 compute cores.
And these are older "white" robots.

I'm going out on a limb to suggest that the 12 robots image is, in fact, an old one designed for the launch of Kaveri, but not used in any official campaign. That makes sense with them being an older design and the number matching the compute cores that AMD says Kaveri has. I have no idea why the writer of the article wouldn't take the simplest explanation, after even stating in the article that AMD already have a processor that they describe as 12 core....?

Put that together with the earlier story and to me it sounds far more like we're going to see a tweaked Kaveri, possibly with higher clock speeds and maybe minor amendments to the cores - kind of a Kaveri B I guess.

    Re: AMD - Piledriver chitchat

Yeah that's definitely one of the most plausible explanations, but like I say, how many times do they need to 'release' one part?

I think this was mentioned in the article, but it does seem a little soon to be releasing any sort of revisions for the APU line considering it's only been out for a few months, and actually available to buy for even less...

    Re: AMD - Piledriver chitchat

Kaveri was delayed by a year,so maybe its Carrizo? It could explain why we have seen so few Kaveri laptops despite it being available for ages for desktop - perhaps this is what laptop OEMs are waiting for?

    Edit!!

The 12 cores could refer to 12 HSA enabled cores.

Supposedly a fake, although someone has gone to a lot of effort especially if you look at the 2MB of L2 cache per module(the leaked mobile Carrizo slide states 2MB for example.)

Having said that an APU with 6 Excavator cores would be quite nice!
